SEPANG: The Transport Ministry is studying the possibility of reducing road tax further.

Minister Datuk Ong Tee Keat said he had asked the Road Transport Department (JPJ) to collate information on the revenue received from road taxes on various categories of vehicles.

He said he hoped that road tax could be reduced further after he passed on the details of the report to the Finance Ministry.

"Of course it depends on the overall and fiscal situation," he said Thursday after a working visit to MASKargo.

On Wednesday, the Government announced a RM200 reduction on road tax for private vehicles with an engine capacity above 2000cc, and a RM50 reduction on road tax for private motorcycles with an engine capacity above 250cc.

Also announced were rebates of RM625 per year for private vehicles with an engine capacity of 2000cc and below, and private pickup trucks and jeeps with an engine capacity of 2500cc and below.

Rebates of RM150 will be given to private motorcycles with an engine capacity of 250cc and below.

Asked if the public transportation would receive further subsidy following the fuel hike, Ong said the Cabinet Committee on Public Transportation would discuss it further.

"Of course, certain things have yet to be worked out. We will do it concertedly.

"Some of the input, initiatives and proposals will be discussed by the committee. At this juncture, it (public transport subsidy) is still open-ended," he said.

Hello Mr.Ong

What happen to MCA=lah? Before and after the price hike for petrol, don't see any of MCA member around. Even today, Bodowi is in consultation with Dumno senior member-la. What happen to multi party consultation? Where is Ong Ka Ting or that samy the "snake" fellow? Talking about road tax reduction is like taking our wallet away and then distribute some of our money back to us...and you call that to reduce our burden...or you call that rebate!!!

Hello MR ONG,

as a comentator has already point out, road tax is low and a certain reduction in roadtax will lead to an increase in toll charges, please dispute him

meanhilwe,

please let us know why the PKFZ is a zone.

please let us know how many bus accidents can be prevented

please let us know how traffic congestion can be alleviated

please let us know who the AP holders are for this year and how you plan to bring an end to it

please also let us know how you plan to seek for lower road tax as you;'re the transport minister that seems incapable of making a decision.

please anwer them truthfully

What's the point of trying to curry favour from more privileged (and I use this term loosely) people by handing out freebies to them - for cars above 2,000cc and motorbikes above 250cc? If they can afford to buy and keep such 'luxurious' vehicles, they certainly don't need any freebies, especially coming from the rakyat's blood money. These 'pacifiers' would be relatively paltry amounts to the more privileged on an individual basis. However, if pooled together, the money could be put to much better use by giving further assistance to lower-income earners. The idea is not to please everyone and give out 'free money', but to ensure more equitable distribution of economic burdens and benefits alike. Though not rich, I'm ready to sacrifice a bit more in the interest of the greater good.

PM said no hike in petrol before the GE but now not only hike the price but to a level of cut throat!

Now the Transport Minister says road tax to be reduced but then later will say it has to be increase.

As long UMNO-BN is there nothing will reduce but only increase!

Reducing the road tax which we pay annually doesn't help much. We probably spend more on petrol in a month than our annual road taxes anyway. Isn't there a better solution to curb future widespread inflation?

Let it die and I also don't care. My old car DRINK Petrol like no one business. I need a new efficient car, hopefully hybrid of petrol and gas.

So you want to increase the petrol, let us buy real good car at normal price.

If Malaysia-Today's admin would allow it, I would love to use very strong language as a reaction to Ong Tee Keat's suggestion...What? He thinks we are all stupid ah?

My road tax is less than RM400/= p.a. and even if Road Tax is zero, it still wouldn't cover the increase in petrol prices.

What??? These bloody UMNO led BN politicians think we are all bodoh ah?

The bodohs are the ones who voted BN in the last election!

The increase in fuel need not be subsidised. But the sales tax and import tax on cars should be removed. This will reduce the price of cars to one third and we do not have to suffer for 10 years to pay off the loans.

More BN idiots appearing. It seemed like or rather this situation only confirm that idiots are at the helm of BN. BN giving peanuts when they rake in >RM15bil.

They should have maintain petrol prices and apply Sales Tax to the non-basic necessities items like soft drinks, junk food, toys, entertainment, restaurants etc. This Sale Tax will affect the middle class upwards while protecting the low income group.

By increasing petrol prices, the low income group will be most affected since petrol is the least expenditure for them but the effects of high petrol prices such as increases in the prices of basic necessities will affect them most.

Sack the Finance Minister and his stupid advisors!!!!!

The Government should abolish road tax. They should abolish tax for imported cars so as to protect a ***** car called Poo-kima-Ton. Raising the prices of imported cars so that ProTon can survive was the doing of *****, the worst PM of the country.

Lets face reality, Proton is dead-meat cos the quality is just comparable to my bicycle 30 years ago and, if anyone still buys this car, it is because that is what they can afford. They are "forced" into buying, not because they want to. Typical of the Dictator PM of 22 years. "Glamour is his name, ****-up the country is his Game"

This means some of us can make money just by buying vehicles from junkyards for less than 200 bucks register it to get a road tax and waits for the rebate of 625 bucks per car. Imagine if i get 10 old junk cars , my rebate to me will be 625 x 10 .This is even better than getting bluechips from KLSE
So many loop holes here.
And what was the formula used and which genius from umno who came up with the rm 625 per car?

Road-tax should be abolished.
AP should also be abolished, and AP Queen must give back all the haram money that she robbed from car-buyers.
All vehicles under 2000 cc should be duty-free
Duty for 2000 cc and above 500%
If no duty, no AP, no road-tax, petrol increase a little bit is OK ...RM 2.00

if we pay market price for petrol its only fair we pay market price for our cars, That way we dont have to burden ourself with 9 years loan for a proton, Imagine if we can save 15,000 to 20,000 on our cars we dont even need the Rm 625 subsidy that Pak Lah said he is going to give us, We could easily save more when we factor in the interest.

Reduce road tax?Hello friend...even if they reduce it we still have to pay toll la!!And the tolls are so bloody expensive.Reloading a Touch n Go card every month due to the large number of tolls that we have is more than paying for the damn road tax and car insurance put together.I think they should just abolish the road tax.Enough of squeezing money from the people. The number of tolls that we have is getting out of hand.

Mr Ong,

Why the hell do we Malaysians need to pay any road tax, when

a) our cars are already taxed exorbitant amount of taxes the day we buy it? i.e. it is like paying road taxes for the next 40 years of the car's life. Don't you agree that this is double/tipple/quadruple form of taxation?

b) we pay daily to use roads, converted to so-called highways
, blocked off and tolled (LDP/Cheras/etc.).

If you can give me a good answer to those 2 questions above, I will not only gladly pay all road taxes your ministry impose, I will also gladly give you a pat on the back and forever stop posting at Malaysia Today.

What a waste of time. Token measures. Reduce the ridiculously high car tax then! Abolish the bullshit AP system? All this hurts the UMNO puteras, so this will never happen. Give the rakyat a few hundred bucks back, but they still protect THEIR interests. BN - GO TO HELL.

You can say Sayonara to Proton. A complete waste of money, and will be a further dinosaur as the top car companies have already begun implementing fuel efficiency measures into their vehicle. Is Proton capable of this next jump in tech requirements? NO! They're still making cars with 1980's technology, but STILL failing. Can't even get the window to wind up properly and mau lagi buat kereta???
