Police report lodged over FB post of Najib’s picture on tombstone

(FMT) – A Penang-based political party today lodged a police report over a viral Facebook post which showed a picture of former prime minister Najib Razak superimposed on to a tombstone.

Penang Front Party (PFP) Youth member Eagen Teoh Kean Liang said the Chinese community considered such an act as a curse and an insult to the family of the former premier.

“The Chinese community cannot accept this at all, even if it was meant as a joke. This could cause a strain in race relations. The poster asked if you have donated to the dead, in reference to Najib.

“I am sure we have all studied moral studies, we are taught to respect everyone, regardless of what they have done.

“Netizens should not resort to bullying and cursing like this, regardless if he is the former prime minister or anyone else,” Teoh said outside the Patani Road police station.

He lodged a police report urging the authorities to investigate the person who created the post.

In a handout given to the press by PFP members, the Facebook post by “Liew Yi” showed Najib’s picture superimposed on a tombstone, with joss sticks and food as offerings.

The words “Mati 2018″ (Died 2018) and “Lahir 1953” (Born 1953) appeared below his picture. A caption on the post read: “Today, I went to donate money to the chicken. Have you donated?”

Liew Yi had shared the picture in a pro-Pakatan Harapan group called “New government new hope”, a Chinese language public group on Facebook with over 13,000 members.

A police spokesman said the report was received and the matter would be looked into.
