Almost RM5 billion allocated to raise English proficiency

KUALA LUMPUR, July 10 (Bernama) -- The government has allocated almost RM5 billion to strengthen the teaching and learning of English in schools, the Senate was told Thursday.

Deputy Education Minister, Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi said the ministry had also provided training for English teachers to help them raise students' proficiency in English.

"We will also include various modules like listening, speaking, writing and literature with focus on grammar. We will ensure that English proficiency means that one not only can speak the language, but can also use it correctly," he said in reply to Senator Samsiah Samsudin Thursday.

Mohd Puad said the government was also planning to recruit 13,933 English teachers for this purpose.

Earlier, when replying to the Senator Zaitun Mat's original question on the number of expert English teachers placed in rural schools, Mohd Puad said that as of today, there were 9,293 excellent teachers in various grades and expertise nationwide.

anybody remember the time when PM Maha wanted to quit during an UMNO annual general meeting, right on stage in front of the microphone on national tv, all the kaki bodeks (i remember hisapputing being one of them) were all talking to each other in english.

oh, and why under the NEP, all malay students who scored Grade 1 in their SPM were send to US and UK to study - they are suppose to be the cream of the crop, they should remain and study in UKm dalam bahasa melayu.

I like this dude Mohd Puad Zarkashi ( Dunno whether he or she, that's not important). Mandarin is for Chinese, Japanese is for Japs, Korean is for Koreans, English for Englishman, Bahasa Malaysia is for Malaysians.
Malaysia should implement all foreigners to understand read and write Bahasa Malaysian before investing in Malaysia. All Malaysian passport should changed to Bahasa Malaysia and any tourists coming to Malaysia must apply for a Bahasa Malaysia passport if not goodbye and go elsewhere. Malaysia must tell the rest of the world Malaysia do not accept any other language except Bahasa Malaysia.

i would like to suggest that all the government ministers including our PM also MUST SPEAK only in Bahasa Malaysia, especially during press conference, eventhough sometime the reporters may ask questions in English, just answer in BM, let them translate by their own.

Can you and all the cabinet ministers do THAT ????????????????????????

UMNO is terrified of Malays learning English because it is an international language and the lingua franca of research and education. The idea is to keep the Malays ignorant and insecure- it makes it easier to control them.

Also because the education system has been deliberately vandalised by UMNO, the Malays have poor English language skills, and in order for them to feel less insecure or 'malu' he wants to discourage its use.

Let us face it, the average Malay would love to be able to converse fluently in English as it is a hallmark of education , status and wealth. So , yet again it is the UMNO politicians who are out of step with the wishes of the Malays.
