(The Star) - The time has come for real action from the Government to fight corruption instead of pussy-footing around, said Transparency International Malaysia president Tan Sri Dr Ramon Navaratnam.

He said if the Government continued talking without real action, people would get frustrated and disillusioned and eventually they would lash back via the ballot box.

“Don’t pussy-foot,” he said when commenting on recommendations in fighting graft at the two-day Government Transformation Pro gramme open day last week.

Many members of the public who attended the programme had questioned why the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) was only interested in catching the “small fry” and did not seemed to be interested in catching the jerung (sharks).

Corruption Lab leader Datuk Hashim Nordin, who is special officer to Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz, in his reply had said it was a lot harder to catch the big fish as they tended to be more sophisticated and more professional in their acts.

Ramon said the programme had generated some good recommendations, including calls for the MACC to investigate politicians and businessmen and those who were living beyond their means without waiting for public complaints and for it to report directly to Parliament.

He said the law would have to be amended quickly to reflect the Government’s urgency in fighting corruption.

He said until the “big fish” were taken to court and punished, people would continue to doubt the commission’s sincerity.

Ramon, who is MACC panel of presentation and consultation chairman, said so far no top political leaders have been charged and convicted for corruption.

Citing the Port Klang Free Zone scandal as an example, he said although former Port Klang Authority general manager Datin Paduka O.C. Phang was charged in court, she was not the real “big fish” as there were people in higher levels.

Social Care Foundation chairman Tan Sri Robert Phang concurred that in the PKFZ scandal, bigwigs were named by the Public Account Committee but none of them were brought to court.

“Those implicated must be given a chance to explain in the court, not in Parliament. The rakyat want to know the whole truth.”

He said the PKFZ scandal was an acid test for the Government and there was a need for political will to be executed without fear and favour.

Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation vice-chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye also said that despite many Government announcements to fight corruption, the people have yet to see real results.

Tan Sri, you said all the words which are right. Politicians and public people should be investigated if they are livinf beyond their means. This is not difficult to identify.

How come there are no main stream politicians ever charged or investigated for corruption? Either ALL our politicians are very clean or the MACC is dirty. These are the only 2 answers available, there can be no other.

MACC is only noted for its famous murder case of Teoh Beng Hock , i don't be surprised if there will more people die mysterious while being under investigations at MACC HQ. Then they will try to cover up like what they did with Teoh Beng Hock case. And secondly.... its a waste of time you think that MACC is going after the big fish which they won't be doing at all...... And thirdly ....MACC repudiation is badly and heavy damage because of Teoh Beng Hock suddenly death while at MACC HQ! That further erodes everyone faith in MACC... and most of all the MACC is another doggie for UMNO....against the opposition !

ya so it seems, he has habit of bending with the breeze lah.
but what is this by the special officer to Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz "it was a lot harder to catch the big fish as they tended to be more sophisticated and more professional in their acts".
why harder? Datuk is in charge of law, he's a lawyer (unless i'm mistaken), and he must surely know the law! so, why use CBT laws etc ALONE for these slime balls? if you're a motorist you must know that speeding is not the ONLY offence they want to pin on you -- there are crossing double lines (what? where? how to drive on if you don't?) ETC.
you see, if they really want to, there are ways. SO, why not the income tax laws? why haven't they used this to investigate people like the toyol etc who have wealth FAR beyond their public and private means? why? are datuks afraid of opening the tin of smelly rotten worms?
other than income tax (no time limit) there are others our sincerely handicapped ministers and authorities like maaack, pull-is and our at-tony's genitals can think up if they want to really fight and eradicate corruption in high places. always excuse, excuse, deflect, deflect, delay, delay.
can i humbly suggest this: like ICAC did, can our maaack and ministers simply pick any suitable really high profile case and go for the jugular. a random pick will do from any of those bigger-than-god types from 25 years ago when things started to go down to the dogs - and nobody seemed to know, continuing to believe we still have the best westminister-type democracy and public administration, and the best of leaders!
open your eyes lah (for bertie wooster, the scales have fallen!).

Why is the chief minister of both Sabah and Sarawak not ''HUNG''....for all the massive corruption they have robbed their respective States...?????.

Just for the 16 million Sing $ case in HK airport alone is enough to Hang this Pakistani Sabah CM...[Musa Aman]....what more for the white hair Rajah CM of Sarawak...mr Taib.

Malaysians of all races are not blind to see that the Umno Government is protecting these corrupt Bastards for their own corrupted survival as without corruption, Umno cannot maintain its member's loyalty...and will fall over night.

A businesswoman was sentenced to death in East China's Zhejiang province for for defrauding investors of 384 million yuan ($56 million) on Friday.

That is another piece of news from China. If you seriously want to change the mindset of the people that corruption is criminal and totally not acceptable, then go all the way. Catch big fish, yes. But with a crooked judiciary, it is meaningless. They will always be released back into the sea of corruption.

Have the balls and gumption to use the most severe punishment under our country's law against all who are corrupt. I challenge the Govt to do that! I challenge the govt regardless whether it is the BN govt or possibly, the eventual Pakatan govt. Remember, CORRUPTION IS CRIMINAL!

A waste of time. !!!! Lets not crack our heads and suggest ways to eradicate corruption. As has been proven, no amount or reports to any agencies in authority will make any difference. Like it or not, those corrupted big fish politicians have made themselves untouchable. Period.

Instead, our energy should focus on the strategy to bury beEND/unMO during GE 13. and work hard to achieve it. That will be more meaningful.

Mana ada ikan Jerung ? More like we have Eels Or lots of Lingams. Look at the stealing of the F5 engine --- how long does the govt need to investigate. Before any real actions can happen, there is an urgent need to change the heads of PDRM, Judicial, MACC and build more jails. Otherwise it will be ikan bilis, ikan bilis, ikan bilis.

It is impossible to fight corruption in Malaysia simply because the government itself is super corrupted. The useless moronic MACC itself has to be investigated. There is absolutely no hope for Malaysia without a new government .THE ONLY WAY OUT IS A NEW GOVERNMENT. START TODAY.PASS AROUND THE GOVERNMENT DIRT TO EVERYONE IN MALAYSIA.LET US AWAKEN MALAYSIANS AND BE ABSOLUTELY PREPARED FOR THE NEXT ELECTION.

MACC is only good for small fish but protecting the jerung. Look at the high profile cases that had been heard. Jerung normally got free.

The MACC is bluffing that big fish is hard to catch.

How can they do it? Should they go after the big fish then we would no longer have any minister's left. Ministers and their spouses will all have to eat nasi behind bars. So this will never happen. Even in a case like Kugan's, just look at the cover-up. Shameless people MACC!

MACC are apple polishers whose main objective is to catch the small fries from the opposition and to cause instability to the opposition government. They will not touch the BN / UMNO big fish so as to cause negative publicity. It looks like their main function is to make the corrupted UMNO government look good and continue to stay in power illegally..

Aiyah, how can one not expect the BN scoundrels not to pussy-foot? After all, it had worked exceptionally well for the past 50 years lah. Also, BN's actually pride themselves in who can wallop the most at the shortest time possible - right now, PKFZ's taking the top honours. Further more, they are all in the same boat and they all learnt well from TDM, the DKK King. So lets not hear more cowardly and beat-about-the-bush comments from but get into the real action of kicking BN out.

hello datuk hashim, no doubt we have not heard about you before but we know you buggers don't have the guts to do so. why not just sub-contract these sophisticated jobs to the ICAC of Hong Kong and learn from them HOW to catch BIG fishes.

i guess you guys are NOT qualified at all to hold whatever position you're having now in this highly IMPORTANT agencies here in Malaysia. you guys are just good to "cari makan" saja. like you have admitted the BIG fishes are more professional in their acts than you.
