Singapore is more like Zimbabwe than Malaysia ever is under the PAP

The Temasek Review

Malaysian constitutional law expert Abdul Aziz Bari sparked a furore lately for likening the state of “lawlessness” in Malaysia to that in Zimbabwe which was echoed by former Law Minister Zaid Ibrahim.

zaidibrahim

In an interview with Malaysiakini, Zaid said:

“Nothing will change unless those who know rise up to expose the vermin (that are) eating and destroying our national institutions and democratic values.”

If Abdul Aziz or Zaid , both lawyers by profession, had repeated the same remarks in Singapore, they would probably be sued for defaming the government and disbarred with their careers destroyed.

Besides no former Law Minister in Singapore will ever dare to criticize the system after being “retired” with a plume job in some government-linked companies to keep their mouths shut.

In a way, Singapore bears a closer resemblance to Zimbabwe than Malaysia is under the ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) and we are not talking about the economic but the political situation in these two countries.

Of course in terms of economic progress, Singapore is way ahead of Zimbabwe and Malaysia, but our archaic, obsolete and repressive political system is not too far behind Zimbabwe.

In fact, Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe  should learn from Singapore’s Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew on the art of masquerading a dictatorship as a “democracy” without incurring the wrath of the free world.

The moronic chauvinists have spoken. And of course they miss the point, given their tendency
to idiocy. You see, this article, is written by a SINGAPOREAN. It is about SINGAPORE.
Specifically the draconian nature of it's politics. In this aspect, it is similar to Zimbabwe,
or it bears similarities with Zimbabwe. In comparison to Malaysia, Singapore is in this
respect closer to Zimbabwe than Malaysia. So goes the writer. And he has a point,
why does developed Singapore show such a third-world attitude to dissent
and freedom? Valid observations from the author. The comments from our moronic
chauvinist commentators are Malaysia this and Malaysia that... C'mon morons...
does that mean that Singapore is controlled by the repressive PAP because of
Malaysia? What the hell type of stupid reasoning is that? No press freedom?...
because of Malaysia. No viable opposition..Malaysia...Nepotism..also because
of Malaysia... No freedom of assembly ...also Malaysia.. I see the answer to
all of Singapore's policies is Malaysia. Now why didn't I think of that...must be
because I'm not a chauvinistic kumquat !!!!
The ISA in that case is wrong for Malaysia but right for Singapore...I see.
That's some political and moral gymnastics. Bodoh punya chauvinists!!!!!

1) The fact that Singaporeans are emigrate legally bodes well for the quality of Singaporeans.
However there are multitudes of qualified people waiting to move to Singapore.

Zimbabwe has lots of emigration but little but little immigration.

Malaysia has lots of emigration & lots of immigration .... but the good quality is leaving and the questionable quality arriving!

2) The birth rate is declining in most develped countries including Japan.

3) A little Darwinism is good to keep the locals on guard... unlike UMNO which creates a false sense of security while the world passes "UMNO - drugged" people in slumberland!

Over time, the MM says, Singaporeans have become "less hard-driving and hard-striving." This is why it is a good thing, the MM says, that the nation has welcomed so many Chinese immigrants (25 percent of the population is now foreign-born). He is aware that many Singaporeans are unhappy with the influx of immigrants, especially those educated newcomers prepared to fight for higher paying jobs. But taking a typically Darwinian stance, the MM describes the country's new subjects as "hungry," with parents who "pushed the children very hard." If native Singaporeans are falling behind because "the spurs are not stuck into the hide," that is their problem.

Singapore's birth rate continues to fall and singaporeans continue to immigrate in hugenumbers. this does not sound like a nirvana to me. It certainly sounds zimbabwe like.

Malaysia stinks like hell if compared to Singapore. To be upfront Singapore Malays looks down on Malaysian Malays. UMNO wants to the rakyat to believe that Singapore Malays are a marginalised race in Singapore. The truth is Singapore Malays proudly indentify themselves as Singaporeans. Singapore Malays make their life without special government handouts. They have achieved more and are way ahead then their Malaysian counterpart.

Those who bash Singapore are the same people who says the Malays in Singapore are marginalized. These are the Malaysians who are brain-washed by the Umno's ketuanan melayu's theme and perhaps the BTN. They know nuts about Singapore. They choose to believe mamakthir's rhetorical condemnation of Singapore just to satisfy their oversized egos.

The people who wrote the above article sound like the SDP of Singapore. Instead of being a credible opposition like the WP and SPP they choose to deviate from the main stream opposition parties and as a result many Singaporeans do not trust them.

Singapore has many short comings but you can't deny that they are a successful country. They must have done something or many things right. Even though Singapore has little political freedom, as some of you claimed, the basic needs of the her citizens are provided, so the intensity of dissent is not as great as in many other countries.

Malaysians, on the other hand, don't even have the basic rights to safety and security. Corruptions are rampant, judiciary are biased, murderers got off scot-free, theft and robberies are the way of life...

The writer has his grouses against the Singapore ruling PAP administration and they are valid ones.
But it is really a long stretch of the imagination to claim S'pore is ahead in the Zimbabwe's likeness compared to M'sia.
S'pore's accomplishments are renowned and acclaimed internationally, though in terms of political vibrancy it is behind our own M'sia.
Yes, quite a few opposition leaders have been sued to bankruptcy and so has quite a few media giants paid large sums awarded for defaming the PAP leaders.
Yet, by and large the S'pore judicial systemis untainted unlike our UMNOputra judiciary!!!

Yet, they indulge in corruption and bribery left, right and centre. They steal the peoples' money like nobody's business.

Meanwhile, across the causeway. . ., those Singaporean are "Kafir" Chinese. They eat pork and drink beer, yet they do not indulge in corruption or steal the peoples' money!

For the blind, they will never be able to see but for those who are not, yes Singapore is a repressive country. It has 3 levels of law. (1) for the Lee family (2) for PAP and then (3) for the ordinary folks.
There are many large worms in the Singapore cupboard which we will never be able to find out.
LKY's success is that he has been able to mask all these indiscretions and still make people happy and believe in him. Only blind people are fooled by all this.
Having said that Malaysia's indiscretions will take any prize. Malaysia truly boleh! And we the people are allowing it to continue. That is the part I cannot understand. Where is the "opposition" on these indiscretions? Has Anwar made any comment for example? Come on guys? Where the balls?

Anytime I will chose a govt like S'pore. Yes S'pore is not perfect but do they have a TBH case. Funny, a withness to a case got killed in MACC. Yup, we paid $500 million to Baginda as submarine commission and to top matters, Mahatir cited Badawi took $250 billion money from Petronas and has so many "bocor" corridors.

We don't have one single minister who have graduated from the ivy leagues. We have a bunch with no standard Msian Univ supported with low standard masterate/doctorate from western univ. Ini macham kita ada banyak ta ada standard who only knows how to show off their saya ada PHD --- Permanently Head Damage arrogance and wants to belittle the rakyat with their new found wisdom.

How come a tiny island like S'pore, a little bigger than KL city has more money than we have and the people have a better quality of life and most can afford to live anywhere in the world after their retirement or before? How many times is S'pore dollar stronger than the Msian ringgit??? If Msia have standards like S'pore and given our natural resources we are the biggest tiger in Asia. No need to pay kopi-O money to govt servants to get things done. Wakey up Mr.Lingam standard Msian law expert, see what is happening to Msia. No wonder you are filthy rich, must be an UMNO bodek & in the company of crooks!!!

As a Singaporean Malay, I disagree that Singapore is likened to be a Zimbabwe.

Minorities are given free education, subsidised food for school children such as the Milk Programme where children are given milk daily to promote health awareness, housing is taken care of, country is safe for my children, police is citizen-friendly unlike in Malaysia where police constantly beat up suspects and those under custody leading to deaths, roads are clean, city is clean, public transport is efficient, government agencies are efficient and effective, corruption is very very low and almost zilch, all my 3 children went to the local University with no issues in admission (entrants based on meritocracy) and they have good jobs in MNCs, my children speak perfect English, plus many more. No taxi driver has ever sent passengers to a jungle area, tie them up and rape or loot their personal effects.

In short, I am happy with the quality of life and living standard in Singapore. The key is the environment is safe for raising a family BUT not in Malaysia. Innocent citizens are constantly hauled up for no reason except being asked for kopi money or to be tortured unnecessarily in the lockup. We can eat and buy whatever we want here. Me and my family never felt like we are 2nd class here. In fact, we feel we are being treated with exception – free education and schooling years of my children. WE live in harmony with other races here.

Can Malaysia match up?

Malaysia is living in the 18th century, no progress in terms of mentality and citizen welfare.

So, Singapore is progressing well and manage to attract high inflow of FDI and it is ranked the world’s number 3 in terms of the best place for expatriates to work.

How about Malaysia? Even I am afraid to get into Johor. Many of my SIngaporean friends, even Malays, are robbed and cars scratched and a couple even got beaten in Genting by the bodyguards of one VIP! This is horrendous….Malaysia is filled with criminals and boasts of crime. Even Anita Sarawak & husband got a taste of crime a while back. Her Mat Salleh husband was slashed in broad daylight!! Mat Rempits are rampant and no women dare to carry shoulder bags. What freedom is this?

Even said. Our taxpayers money is well spent.

People, I guess, are never contented. Once a sage (don't remember who it was but I believe it was one of those Chinese philosophers) said happiness is content.

Truth is nothing is perfect in this world, but there are degrees of perceived perfection. Sure, Singapore can lament about how dictatorial LKY was. How the opposition does not 'exist'. But to my Singapore brethrens: given the half of what you guys have Malaysians would be contented.

Consider this: We have a PM who is involved in murder, adultery, and corruption (RM5 million commission to his poltical advisor for the purchase of submarines); we have institutionalised discrimination which is government policy in the form of NEP and Ketuanan Melayu.

We have a whole bunch of royalty jokers who only know how to take but never give.

We have ginormous scandals and corruption involving billions of ringgit committed by politicians. We have a rapist for a Chief Minister, a money launderer as a Menteri Besar... I don't want to go on. It would take up all the server's storage space.

I said contention is relative. On the other hand if one compares Malaysia to some failed African states then Malaysians ought to be thankful. But what I'm saying is we should not be making direct comparisons like this.

What we should do instead asking the question of if it was not because of how Malaysia was governed for the past 52 years by a corrupt BN/UMNO what would have happened today? The potential that Malaysia had was never given a chance to be realised because of a gross misgovernment.

Malaysia was blessed with many things. Natural resources, fertile land, but the sad thing is, we never make full use of what God blessed us with.

So, again, before Singaporeans start comparing Malaysian government with Singapore's think deeply and be objective in your analysis. Would you trade your PAP with UMNO/BN? If you do, I'd be more than happy to let you have UMNO/BN with all its corrupt baggage.

I've said all the above with sincerity. You don't know how lucky you are. If only Malaysia had a government which is half as clean and efficient as yours....

Anyway, we have all the sins of Zimbabwe (rampant corruption, steep inflation, clueless leadership, tainted leaders, racists running the government, blotted civil service, inefficient public works, a depleting national coffer, corrupted judiciary/prosecution office/police/civil service/public institutions ....etc) while Singapore have only one.
They are doing a lot better than us despite having little natural resources.

Singapore is not a Zimbabwe, Malaysia is.. The reason is simple and clear . Singapore is on the way up an up but Malaysia is on the way down crumbling under its own weight of massive corruption. Singapore may be an authoritarian society but its citizens enjoy first class education and services. Singapore politicians, government departments are not as corruptable compared to Malaysia. I tend to disagree with the author of this article. Why we must exclude others areas of important such as economic if we want to debate on a bigger picture. We must see thing from the whole lot of issues in order for us to come to a conlusion on camparision. If Singapore is as bad as what you"ve written like the judiciary, why there are a lot of FDI flowing into Singapore instead of Malaysia. Why some MNC when they want to set up their operations in Malaysia they will sign their agreement in other countries like Singapore, Hong Kong etc and not in Malaysia. But in Malaysia the outflow of FDI had become worsen years by years compare to inflow. Malaysia economy had been stagnant for more than ten years as admitted by the DFM2 recently.

No doubt every country in the world had their flaws. No one is 100% perfect. What is more important for any country to progress is their management from the people who implement the policy that suit their country base on needs and not base on greeds. The welfare of their citizens will be their priority and not the welfare of their cronies.

The current set of most of the Malay ministers are clones of Mugabe unfortunately. I think Malaysia should change it belief to to run like a socialist country. The author of this article is wrong.

Singapore is certainly not Zimbabwe so is Malaysia.

Singapore don't have press freedom as much as a true democratic country has. Malaysia is slightly better in this area but still nothing compare to the press freedom practise by other. Singapore does not have credible alternative political parties to vote for. Malaysia used to be quite similar to Singapore but since 2008 election, we do have alternatively.

Singapore is almost corruption free while Malaysia is still a long way down. But Singapore government brought development, good and accessible education, top quality health care, excellent public transport and most important of all peace and harmony to the country. Malaysia still have a long way to catch up with Singapore in this area.

Either way linking to Mugabe to Singapore will insult most intelligent. Linking Mugabe to Malaysia is also wrong as we are much better off than Zimbabwe in spite that we still have plenty of works to be done.
