Malaysians may be shocked by the sheer greed and dishonesty of the individuals and companies involved. But what is unpalatable is when ROS acts as a bully for the state.

By Mariam Mokhtar, Malaysian Mirror

When I first flew over Sarawak, about two decades ago, the tree-tops, from above, looked like a carpet of tempting green broccoli.

Today, the landscape resembles a scarred battleground. Deep troughs, gouged out of the land, expose red-orange soil. Logging activities scatter trees like ten-pins. Green land masses stretching to the horizon, display spiral patterns from the regimented planting of only one type of tree. Oil palm has displaced the native species.

Back then, the bus journey from Miri to Batu Niah, was an exciting bumpy ride with occasional hair-raising bends, steep gradients or deep ravines on either side of the road. Our travelling companions were the people and their livestock, living along the route.

Today, the pan-Borneo highway is a major artery and channels development into the countryside. Nevertheless, there are reports that this major road is a dirt track in places. Bad lighting, terrible communication systems and highway robberies are common. So much for development!

My first visit to a longhouse then, was a two-hour trek along a belian walkway. We gathered ferns and fresh-water snails, en-route for dinner. Food, from nature’s bounty, was plentiful.

Our arrival was greeted with much gaiety. When my host presented me with a chicken to slaughter, I didn’t know which was more petrified – the squawking chicken or me, with the knife that was placed in my hands. I was touched by the Ibans’ kind gestures and concern over my religious dietary obligations.

Today, the reality is depressing

The following morning, we washed in the clear, fast flowing river. The water was teeming with life, and later, we feasted on fish and fruits, harvested from the river-bank. We hurried quietly but respectfully past sacred burial grounds before checking the ripening golden crop in the nearby padi fields.

Today, the reality is depressing.

The govt through its cronies have plundered the resources of the land, all in the name of development. What I do not understand is, why are we tolerating all this actions??? We can read reports after reports of scandals, wastage of public money, injustices etc for 40 years (since 1969). We can thump our chests, scream our hearts out, pull at our hair when we see all these actions by the govt and yet that is all we do. We have the one power that the govt cannot take from us and yet we have not used it or we did not use it wisely. Yes you have guess it correctly, my FELLOW MALAYSIANS. And that is the power to vote the gvot you want.!!!!!!!

Sabah and Sarawak is one of the last remaining gold mine in Malaysia. Some are certainly going to take the advantage and plunder while they can. It is hard to maintain they current lifestyle after the last generel election and the rigs are running dry.

And so I wonder if the real intention here is to build dams or to harvest logs. Rumors has it that roads for Bakun were never designed to be straight. Twisting and turning among the forest, distance does not matter for this crooked road as long as trees to fall are bountiful.

Wake up fellow Sabahans and Sarawakians. Our future is in our hands. Vote wisely.

P/S: Dear writer, if you used TMNet/StreamyX to post this article, you're most probably going to get sued by TM. And in the spirit of 1Malaysia, BN might just consider taking away your citizenship.

Dear Mariam Mokhtar,

I really admire all the articles you had written for all of us to share. Thank you for your valuable times spent.
Come back to the topic, it's a common knowledge to all of us that they will issue all kind of statements thinking all the peoples are fools and are so easy to dupe. To destroy one of the best rainforest in the world, they will use the word " DEVELOPMENT FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE RAKYAT". But actually it's for the " DEVELOPMNET FOR THEIR FAT BANK ACCOUNT AND THEIR CRONIES".
Just take an example, the Bakun Dam. After what they are looking for, the timber are finish, the developer Ekran said they are bankcrupt but their CEO became a multi billionaires.

I sincerely hope SAM and all the responsibles NGOs are not disheartened by ROS and will continue to fight for a better world for us to live in. If the rainforest are left unchecked and keep on been raped by the powers to be, one days definately mother nature will wreak havoc to our beloved nation. Thank you once again to all of you for your care and concern to our nation.

Never to underate the scorn of the Sarawakians. The robbers and the extortionists could and should not take everything in their own hands to dismantle the serenity of peace and harmony enjoyed by the Sarawakians for decades. At this rate the evils are rampaging their territory, a revolt is inevitable, by then it would be too late for those who trepass to flee 'cos the scorn of Sarawakians shall be at its worst !!!

Be very wary, the intruders!!!

By the way, where is Idris Jala? Isn't he supposed to defend his tribe and country folks instead of working for UMNO goons who happen to involve in disrupting the livelihood of his people??? Why is he turning a blind eye to the injustice done to his own folks while he serves as a running dog to those who suppress and rob his folks back home in Sarawak????Is he out of his mind or he has other selfish plan of his own to enrich himself through foul means with the help of the Regime???

It is really depressing to read. I know what you mean when 20 years ago, flying over Sarawak, you see greenery like a giant carpet covering a world renowned biodoversity basin. Today the landsacpe looks like a leper's body covered with patchy sores all over.

I will throw in my support for NGOs fighting against unsustainable development. The head of ROS should resign for abuse of power.
