The Abolish ISA Movement (GMI) and rights group Suaram aim to hold simultaneous candlelight vigils against the abhorred law in eight states around the country on Sunday.

The protest will be held as an effort to pressure Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein to repeal the Internal Security Act.

Aug 1 marks the 50th anniversary of the draconian act, which was introduced by first prime minister Tunku Abdul Rahman's administration in 1960.

The candlelight vigils will be held at the following venues and times:

  • Dataran MBPJ, Padang Timur in Petaling Jaya at 8pm
  • Speaker's Square, Penang (9pm)
  • Dataran Bandaraya Ipoh (8pm)
  • Dataran Zero KM, Sungai Petani (8pm)
  • Taman Hijau, Jalan Sultanah Zainab, Kota Bharu (8pm)
  • Pusat Tanah Wang, Jalan Perdada, Sibu (8pm)
  • Bangunan Al Idrus Commercial Centre, Kuching (8pm)
  • Front Entrance of 1 Borneo Hypermall, Kota Kinabalu (1pm)

On Monday, GMI chairperson Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh announced that the coalition of NGOs would distribute around 100,000 leaflets on the draconian law on the same day.

GMI also plans to erect billboards and put up banners on the ISA in Selangor, he added.

Syed Ibrahim called on the government to abolish all existing detention-without-trial laws such as the ISA, Emergency Ordinance 1969, Restricted Residence Act 1933 and Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 with immediate effect.

Suaram's 2009 Human Rights Report - released on July 21 - said Najib's first year in office marked further deterioration in the state of human rights in the nation.

In his maiden speech as prime minister, Najib had said his administration would not use the ISA arbitrarily and would give importance to the principles of human rights and civil liberties.

The government is planning to table amendments to the ISA in the areas of length of detention, rights and treatment of detainees and their families, the power of the home minister, the use of ISA for political reasons and detention without trial.

The location at Dataran MBPJ, Padang Timur in Petaling Jaya is rather confusing as it shows a different location in the GPS, it shows somewhere at Kelana Jaya near the famous seafood restaurant. So guys, remember the actual location is Opposite AMCORP MALL !

To encourage the timid ones more, i will say that usually such parties are so much fun with free water showers and if you are lucky you get free KaliFan and a place to stay for the night. smilies/smiley.gif)

@Better My .. there are those who couldn't be bothered or just plain chicken to come out in the open where Special Branch officers and photographers can snap them. I got such friends too, until u have to drag them and give them free teh tarik also don't want. And you think they will light up their candles in their homes? They probably lite up a cigarette and say they did lite up something. Or if they are asked by their housemates why they liting up the candle for, they will say "Oh.. wrong candle.. tot that it was the aroma candle oil". All kiasu one"

Very funny! Hope these are the exception, not the norm to those who are aware of the struggle and aware of the fact that the war needs to be won. Put a candle in front of the house in the evening and let any residual conscience in their mind prick them till no ends. Try it. If my freinds have none, boy, I would need to ressess who these "my friends are..

Re: Why need ISA some more?!! TieuuuNahSeng! "
I know what the Foochow of Sibu and Sitiawan, maybe even the infamous Sitiawan Ngeh cousins, will say " E Neh Ni cone" to ISA.

"Do not deceive, do not despise
Each other, anywhere.
Do not be angry, and do not
Secret resentment bear;
For as a mother risks her life
And watches over her child,
So boundless be your love to all,
So tender, kind and mild.
"Yea cherish good-will right and left,
For all, both soon and late,
And with no hindrance, with no stint,
From envy free and hate;
While standing, walking, sitting down,
Forever keep in mind:
The rule of life that's always best
Is to be loving-kind.

PUHLEEZZ... lighting up a candle at home when no one can see you has no impact whatsoever. How do you think Marcos or Suharto or Apartheid ends? Thousands lighting up at home?

Cmon.. show up where it matters or go wait to die slowly at home. At your death beds.. one fine day.. remember back this moment.. that.. i was nowhere. i was chicken. Now i am going to die.. just like EVERYONE else... no bloody KARMA to show. Even cannot bring Maybank2u account to my grave. Think about it!

Remember frontliners..and some backliners.. You are investing in change for the better. Your deeds are accounted for. You shall get blessings in disguise. I am talking about Karma.. not talking about 72 virgins in paradise!

We MUST support ALL the groups, individual, reporters, polticians, leaders who have put their necks out
to voice against this ISA that cripple the nation for decades, hurt/kill so many patriots who want to do the best for their country and the many unjustified deaths in custodies, and last but least, importantly, YOU.
NO to "Ifs or butts
NO to "Maybe, I will think about it
NO to " I wil do it next time"
NO to " Sorry lah, I got to do this & that"

You are F jack ass and freeloader scum if you even have tiny hints in your brain of not supporting this Candle Light Virgil protest in any shape or form, 1 Aug Sunday, tomorrow.

If you can’t make it to these sites, light candles wherever you are at some lunch or dinner tables.
Show that you demand the rules that you want to live by in our very own beloved nation.
ALL other countries are taken. This is YOUR nation.
It is the right conscience thing to do. Just do it.

Other sites for ISA - watch protest.

ISA sepatutnya digunakan untuk tahan tanpa bicara elemen subversif seperti agen komunis, agen CIA dan agen pengganas, bukan agen parti berdaftar dan bergiat demi kepentingan rakyat.

I be in MBPJ with few friends.
