So I whack the Malays. I whack them because foreigners think that the Malays are a joke. I am angry with these foreigners. I feel insulted that they say these things about the Malays. I am also Malay. So when they run down the Malays they are also running me down.
NO HOLDS BARRED
Raja Petra Kamarudin
My Malay friends ask me why is it I am very harsh towards the Malays. I am Malay. So why am I cruel towards the Malays? Well, it is because I am Malay that I am cruel. If I am not Malay then I would not be bothered about the Malays.
Do I criticise the Arabs? I have been to Mekah ten times in my life so I know the Arabs very well even if I don’t live in their country. I know what the Arabs are like. They too are Muslims like me. In fact, Mekah is the centre of Islam. So why don’t I also whack the Arabs?
That’s because I don’t care about the Arabs. I do not have nice things to say about the Arabs. So better that I don’t say anything because anything that I would say would be far from complementary. I am not Arab so the Arabs can make fools of themselves for all I care. And they do make fools of themselves.
But when the Malays make fools of themselves I do care. And that is why I am very uncompromising towards the Malays. I care that the Malays make fools of themselves.
I regard it as my right to whack the Malays. Malays have every right to whack the Malays. But I don’t take kindly to the Chinese and Indians whacking the Malays. Malays can whack Malays. But when the Chinese and Indians whack the Malays I will whack them back. I will not let them get away with it.
Okay, I am not a thoroughbred Malay. I am only part-Malay. Only my father is Malay. My mother is Welsh. But then who is a thoroughbred Malay? Most Malays are of mixed blood. The only thing is that my blood is mixed with Welsh blood, not with Javanese, Sumatran, Siamese, Minangkabau, Acheh, Indian, Chinese, etc., blood.
So what if my blood is mixed with Caucasian blood and not with Javanese, Sumatran, Siamese, Minangkabau, Acheh, Indian, Chinese, etc., blood? Mixed blood is mixed blood. Whether it is Asian-European or Asian-Asian, it is still mixed blood.
In fact, my great grandmother was Orang Asli. Her name was Hasnah Binti Pelong. She was the second wife of Sultan Ala'Eddin Suleiman Shah, the Fifth Sultan of Selangor.
Sultan Suleiman was Bugis. So that, in fact, makes me more Malay than many Malays in Malaysia in spite of my Welsh blood. I have Orang Asli blood in me. I have more right to Malaysia than millions of other pendatang Malays who invaded my country and now claim it as their own.
Bumiputera konon! Hello brader. We Orang Asli were here first. So don’t try to play that who is more Malay game with me. You will lose.
I interact with Japanese, Koreans, Americans, British, French, Germans, Indonesians, Thais, Singaporeans, Filipinos, and people from many other countries. Somehow they don’t see me as Malay. Maybe it is because of how I look. So they talk to me. They tell me a lot. They tell me what they think. And they think very poorly of the Malays.
These foreigners tell me that the only reason they employ Malays is because of the requirements of the New Economic Policy. If not for that they would not employ Malays. They said they could employ one Chinese for three Malays they employ. One Chinese can do the job of three Malays.
They think Malays are lazy. They think Malays are very slow. They think Malays lack initiative. They think Malays lack grey matter.
There I sit listening to foreign investors and managers running down the Malays while forgetting that I am also Malay. If it were one or two who say this I would say these people are bigots who are prejudiced against the Malays. But when everyone tells me this then the problem must be real. The problem must be the Malays.
So I whack the Malays. I whack them because foreigners think that the Malays are a joke. I am angry with these foreigners. I feel insulted that they say these things about the Malays. I am also Malay. So when they run down the Malays they are also running me down.
I cannot whack the foreigners. I cannot whack them not because I am scared they will not come to Malaysia. I cannot whack them because I know they are telling the truth.
Of course the truth hurts. The truth always hurts. And because it is the truth I cannot whack the foreigners for running down the Malays. The anger builds up in me. I need to whack somebody. But I can’t whack those who are telling the truth. So I whack the Malays instead. I whack the Malays because I am ashamed that the foreigners say bad things about the Malays and also because what they are saying is the truth and there is no way I can argue with them or prove them wrong.
But that does not mean I like others whacking the Malays. If you whack the Malay I will whack you back. If you are another Malay then that is okay. But if you are not Malay and you whack the Malays then I will whack you back. I have my pride and dignity and if you insult the Malays then you are insulting me as well. And I don’t take kindly to insults. So you whack the Malays at your own peril.

The other mass of non Malays are just followers have no clue to how BN/UMNO politics work. Till MT,Malaysiakini and others started to bring out the real truth. It is the younger generation who are in cyber space that have opened our eyes and there are many Malays in that equation and smart ones I must say. It has to be our duty as collective people of Malaysia to bring knowledge and information to the ones who do not know this. We should start a real serious campaign to get the message out that Indians, Chinese Malays dan lain lain are aware and have a responsibility to elect a responsible and accountable government for the future. Like you I am also going to school at 56 and have mid term exam tomorrow. You are a good man Bro and keep up the good work. Bless your heart and thank you for all that you do for the people of Malaysia.

This is a true story of a Malay car workshop owner. He employed 100% Chinese. When asked why didn't he employ Malays. His aswer was this:
Malay workers will down their tools for lunch or break on the dot, irrespective of whether the work is half done or not.
But, for Chinese, he must complete his work first before taking any break. This is the differnce: Attitude. Malays are not lazy, but their attitude

There are many categories of Chinese and sometimes the place where they come from have the bearing on their manners and rogue characters and these people have no regards for anybody else.
The mild Chinese, the well-mannered Chinese, the Cinakuis, the Cinapeks , the Cinababi and the Chinese ah Beng ah Hwey!
Just one example that get my blood running would be those bloody ill-mannered, discourteous drivers(man and woman) they think the roadway belongs to their grandfather when they are not even the right-of-way bulldozing their way without giving two hoots about safety of others and show no courtesy and even turn a blind eyes when they are supposed to stopped for the moving traffic on the straight road while turn right or left! So to these Cinababi, learn to be courteous at least! Even one of the neighbor is a Cinababi who would not move an inch to the side while waiting for his stupid wife to come out of the house, he defiantly reads his newspaper when he obviously saw our car and others coming through but have to wait for his stupid Red Porsche Cayenne, Toyota or BMW X3 or whoever hearse transport he might have owned he damn Fcuking proud of, you see this is the real Cinababi who thinks they have a great deal with cars but low on manners, they should vanish away!
I see 'less' of Malay in that manner and they are more courteous unless they are the rempits but the Malay motorcyclists in Penang are a impatient and noisy lot I have seen on the streets, they will go ballistic like drunkards even some cars have to slow down because of bad traffic. And in Penang, be wary of motorcyclists coming from nowhere and appear from the sides!

If you were gainfully employed, you won't have the time to whack your own kind.
These foreigners tell me that the only reason they employ Malays is because of the requirements of the New Economic Policy. If not for that they would not employ Malays. They said they could employ one Chinese for three Malays they employ. One Chinese can do the job of three Malays. This is a very reason the governmenmt adopted concessionary policy towards the malays.

a) Raise the standard of education to that of the world's best at all levels, from kindergarten to post-graduate studies and make education holistic.
b) Put in special empowerment programs for the weak regardless of race so that these weak can meet the challenges posed by the high standard education and consequently excel in whatever they do. That way the Malays will automatically be empowered.
c) Once empowered, these Malaysians including Malays will automatically do well in life. That will give these people a sense of pride and achievement.
The above methodology would ensure that the weak (of any race) is empowered. If the Malays feel that they are weak and disadvantaged the above methodology will ensure that they are prepared for any eventuality as a good education will put them on par with or better than any other people in the world. In fact they will be sought after even by the foreigners.
Instead of empowering the Malays, BN has spoon fed them all these while. Naturally their full potential will never be realized with such spoon feeding. In fact spoon feeding will make them weaker. Thirty years ago we had many fine and respectable Malays judges, even without the NEP. Now you cannot find such Malay judges. This is just one example. There are many more.

I will disagree with you on some salient points.
If only Malays (and not other races) can only whack Malays, Malaysia will, forever, be trapped in a time warp set by the founding fathers when they, maybe in evidently, formulated a constitution that has racial segregation as its backbone. Maybe the times were different then. Maybe on hindsight that formula now seems inadequate. But issues of Malay race, religion, royalty and language have been made out of bounds to non-Malays and successive UMNO governments have used these issues to divide and rule in order to retain power and different groups and individuals have exploited these issues irresponsibly for their own selfish ends. Do we still want this to continue or some adjustments should be made to reflect the changed times and circumstances? When do we become a country of Malaysians, instead of a country of Malays, Chinese, Indians, Dusun-Kadazans and Ibans?
If we cannot change what is set in concrete in the near future by way of legislation, perhaps we, as individuals and groups, can open a window of free debate and criticism (within the confines of the law and not the law as practiced by UMNO) without getting emotional and without fear or favour.
Firstly, we should all stop stereotyping each other based on race, religion and language. When we stop stereotyping we can begin to see that there is a good side beyond the bad side of any race that we see all too often stereotype. We may even begin to realize we are of one race – the human race.
Secondly, we should be able to criticize an individual for his speech or misconduct which is against basic human decency and rules of proper social conduct, irrespective of his or our racial background. Of course, if the speech or misconduct is against the law, the law will take care of that and, suddenly and strangely, our racial prejudices are relegated to the background.
When speech or conduct does not attract the force of the law, why can’t I also criticize or even comment solely because the recipient is of a different race or religion and without raising an outcry from other frothing in the mouth members of his community?
Owing to the fact that racial identification and segregation has been made the norm in government institutions and in people’s lives, when an inter-communal issue crops up, we as individuals very quickly identify and align ourselves along racial lines. Can we not debate and discuss the merits and demerits of any argument without bringing in our racial and religious prejudices?
When a Malay behaves badly, why can’t I, a Chinese but also a Malaysian but definitely a Malaysian first, whack that Malay. I whack him because of his poor conduct, not because he is Malay. I whack him not because I am a racist which I am not. I also whack him because the whacking will do him good. At least I am not adopting a tidak apa attitude which is of no benefit to anyone. But I will do it without racial overtones and with sufficient sensitivity and respect for his religion and culture. We and our forebears have lived with each other for decades past. We should all be able to do that.
I do not mind if a Malay whacks a Chinese for bad behavior if the latter genuinely deserves it. But I do mind if the Malay does so purely because of racial or religious differences or some Ketuanan bullshit.
It is wrong to stereotype a Malay as being stupid, lazy, incapable or uncompetitive. The comments in this column can testify to that and from this day on, we should desist from such ideas even when tempted out of anger. I have met countless articulate, professional Malays in my working life and simple hard working folks from town and desa. Many of my best friends are Malays and they are upright, educated and decent human beings. (Muyihiddin eat your heart out, they are Malaysians first, Malays second). Some were friends (brothers more than anything else) from primary school. Upbringing, good education and conditioning in a sound home and social environment have produced such fine Malays.
I can’t help but feel also that, generally, many foreigners think poorly of Malays. I have stayed briefly overseas in several countries and have heard unsavoury comments about Malays. Maybe that has to do with the bad press, mainly because of the UMNO types and, what RPK termed, Malays who make a fool of themselves. Maybe all that can change when we get rid of the UMNO government and the UMNO types and begin the long hard road to restore the good name of the Malays and Malaysia.

I would also favorably recall a pregnant female subordinate who is a Malay. Despite her pregnancy she seldom took medical leave and worked until the very last minute she carried tiffin carrier to take a cab to General Hospital for the delivery. It is just that Malays in Malaysia are very spoilt by the Government. Just compare our Malays with their Indonesian counterpart who came over here.

Once Tun Dr Mahathir stated that government had in many ways 'marginalised' and pushed the Chinese to the maximal ...deprived them in many giftouts and blessings....the more they were squeezed..the more the Chinese excelled...they march forward with golden feet plus golden achievement
The Chinese live by the determination goal..this are something that Malays should digest it...determination goal carries no short cut ..sure it carries 'smartway'
written by Mestizo, October 28, 2011 15:53:20
What causes someone to be lazy or hardworking has a lot to do with how they were brought up, the environment they were exposed to and also the system they were subjected to. I remember over 20 years ago, I was in Shenzhen. At the time, China was very much a communist country unlike today where they are very much capitalist with no democratic election. We stayed in the Shangri-La hotel which probably their first privately run hotel there at that time. Services were excellent. We walk a few blocks to another hotel known as Century Hotel then. It was a government own and managed hotel. Services were sucked. Comparing the two hotels, one which was privately own and manage, while the other was government own and manage. Same Chinese people but different attitude. One extremely initiative and hardworking, while the other is hopelessly lazy and having couldn't care less attitude. What was the problem? Well, in this case, it was the system of rewarding. In Shangri-La of course, they pay better and rewarding was on merit. In Century Hotel on the other hand, it was fix and low pay, and they don't focus on merit. I suppose this say it all that, it is the system that have greater impact.
In Malaysia, they way the BN government implemented NEP has caused more harm than good to the Malay race. I am sure they will not admit it and as usual blame on others and also the Malays. If the system were to subject to other race, it will equally caused harm to that race although extend of the impact could differ. Couple with other practices such BTN. If we keep telling our own race that their failure were due to other race, soon they probably believe in it. If our failure is due to other people, surely there is no need for us to improve. Just like our own children. If they failed the examination, we blame the teachers and school, what would happen to our children. Study hard or continue to enjoy life?
I suppose a lot is due to common sense. Survival of the fittest will certainly have impact on us and that is already explained well in Charles Darwin so need not dwelt with it. Some people were wondering why so many Non Bumi Malaysians were doing extremely well overseas? Well, it is because they were subjected to a disadvantage environment in Malaysia which force them to work harder. So when they were exposed to level playing field when they were overseas, suddenly things become a lot easier to succeed.
I hope those reading would not look at it from racist point. We could learn from one another. We could move on as Malaysian without prejudice to race or religion. We force every Malaysian to work hard for everything. We have no choice but to focus on Merit based otherwise things can only get worse. If we are going to help, we have to help them in the right way and not to the disadvantages of others. If we help the weaker Malaysians due to their inability to support financially, we should still focus on merit among those deserving one. There is no free ride for any race and everyone has to work for it. If every Malaysian know this is the only rule, they have no choice but to work the butt out.
Of course what I said above was my experience and perception. Individually I have came across Malays who are very smart, extremely hardworking and competitive. But what mentioned above refer to generally.

cheekiaw did bring up very good examples that need to be given some thoughts by the governments managing their countries laden with "executives" who use the name of their own race ( in this case "MELAYU" ) in vain , to continuously perpetuate their iron grip at the control panels of the government . And after independence to date , the same groups of "puaks" are continuously elbowing each other to oust challengers and win control at the "panels of power" ! In such instances the inevitable dire consequences will be , as proven since then till now, the continued degradation of all issues to prevent the bigger majority of the rural and city fringes MELAYU from improving themselves at too fast a pace which will inevitably be a threat to the "SUPREMACIST MELAYU" ! THE MELAYU MUST BE MADE TO FISH AND NOT GIVEN FISH , EVEN TO THE EXTENT OF THE SUPPLYING OF "FREE" FRIES !
The Melayu at large have been kept in "sterile domes" and will not survive outside their domes ! Who was the smart "executive" who had "MELAYU" owned lands chopped as "MALAY RESERVES" ? SEE ! They have all these years unknowingly living in their own reserves like the RED INDIANS ! Only very rich SUPREMACISTS ELITES can afford and allowed to buy from such owners as such "restricted" lands will be out-o bounds to all the other Malaysians who are not Melayu !
If one were to view more closely at the manipulating hands and schemes of the "SUPREME ELITE MELAYU " one will be able to notice that even all the ROYAL houses (nine in the nation) have since then till now been deliberately left to "deteriorate" and "ROT" in all ways for much more easier access and intimidation by the "EXECUTIVES" ! For some , one or two did rise up to shine but the power to continue to make them shine saps only too quickly as they already had their limps tied to the strings of the puppeteers !
The vast majority of the rural folks and those who are living in the fringes of the cities have historically been attuned to many religious teachings and adherence that make them what they are today ! The teachings let and allowed to be imparted to them since then and now become their real setbacks in a fast pace country in particular and the free world in general .
I usually tell over-protective parents and elders to reduce strangle holds over their youngsters to allow them to express themselves with wise guidance but not strict controls ! Such situations will definitely be a general benefit for everybody like a multiracial nation like ours !

"Chinese should be whacked on the materialistic stance that caused Chua Soi Lek to be elected as MCA chairman, what a joke to the Chinese community..
Indians should be whacked on their narrow-mindedness ignorance in supporting MIC, etc "
CSL was not elected by the Chinese, he was elected by a bunch of power-hungry chaps. And that also means MCA is no longer representing Chinese! Same goes to Indians for MIC, and even Malays for UMNO. Do you think all Indians supported Samy Vellus? MIC could not remove him, see how people in Sg. Siput removed him.

I did say in general, most malays are lazy... There are also 1-2 of them who are hardworking, but that's only 1 out of 10. No, I'm not kidding.
Btw, some of them work longer than I am and I know they have higher salary than I am.
And also, how can could having a low salary a reason to be lazy? Are you one of them too?
Do you know who is the most rajin malays in my company?
The answer is the toilet makcik! She's so hardworking, every time I see her, she's cleaning, throwing trash, arranging stuffs, wash the toilets, basically non-stop.
1 thing I wanna mention is a pure malay company has this bad practice which I think greatly affects the company performance in a long run. Malay company tend to pratice only Rewarding system, but neglecting Punishment system. On the other hand, if you screwed up or perform badly in a chinese company you're out... no question asked.
I cannot tell you where I work at, but it's one of the big companies in malaysia, which are semi-government controlled.
Cheers.

It is not surprising because under the correct working environment, all of us ( Chinese, Indians or Malays ) are on level play and those with correct working attitude and mindset can be a world different among the rest.
Malays are NOT lazy or handout slaves. Malays are being made to be lazy by the UMNO government. There is so much different between a Singapore and Malaysian Malays and those Malaysian Malays who are doing great in Singapore is a testament to the fact that Malays are hard working and diligent and as efficient as any races in this world.

Many grateful thanks, RPK, for standing up for the rakyat, walking with Allah & singlehandedly fighting against the racist, the zealots & the corrupt in power!
THE TRUTH WILL SET US FREE!

I have a teacher friend and I ask her if the malays fail to catch up with other races in class, what will she do. She say she just move on. Losing time with them will affect other races in the class. So if this is the case then how are the malays going to pass the exam...Oh! sorry they don't need to pass exam.

But the Malays I know back in the late sixties were of complete different breed!!!
I had 2 Malay classmates in Form5 science , in 1967.
Well entering science classes those days, already big academic achievement. These 2 guys at that time came from very poor kampong family, and they have to study under kerosene lamps.
Both scored reasonably good Senior Cambridge results , much better then mine.
I do not know where these 2 now.
What I am trying to say is the gov is all to be blamed for the present situation why the Malays lost respect not only from foreigners but also from local non Malays

Malays should be whacked on the many ills caused by evil BN governance.
Chinese should be whacked on the materialistic stance that caused Chua Soi Lek to be elected as MCA chairman, what a joke to the Chinese community..
Indians should be whacked on their narrow-mindedness ignorance in supporting MIC, etc
So are the Lain-lains' ignorance in supporting BN in Sabah and Sarawak, etc.....
Whack when whack is due, likewise credit when credit is due.....

Many first generation Eurasians seem to be severely conflicted psychologically by their mixture, often ending up trying desperately to prove they are of their father's (or mother's side), because they know what other "purer" people (relatives, included) are saying, or thinking behind their backs.
Result? They become more than 100 per cent Malay (or Chinese, Indian etc), and more that 100 per cent Muslim (or Buddhist, etc) all to "prove" they are one with the ethnic side they want to fit themselves into.
This is what is getting played over and over again in the pages of RPK's postings. A sad attempt to want to be embraced by the Malay community, when he in fact TRANSCENDS both the Malay and Welsh communities. He is what a Malaysian of MIXED ETHNIC DESCENT, a Lain-Lain. And quite frankly he should be PROUD to be a Lain-Lain.
After all, I cannot imagine why if ever I was given the chance I would want to be called a Malay, or a Chinese, or an Asian, or an European, for that matter. I desire none of these. I am NOTHING of their kind. I am Lain-lain. Proud and free of all these racial and ethnic wrangling that is tearing Malaysia apart.
So there. Now you know what we Lain-lain think of your racial (and cultural) purity, and the like.

A USM geneticist’s study concluded that 'Modern Malays' are an admixture of races, predominantly Chinese, with 20 per cent Malay and traces of Indian DNA. That makes you RPK a half Welsh, a quarter Chinese and a quarter Malay.
How then a quarter Malay in you can claim supreme to whack Malays who are genetically half Chinese?
By the same token, shouldn’t RPK also whack the Chinese in order to defend the Chinese? And you better not forget too, you are as Chinese as you are Malay!

On the other end if you look back some 30 years ago the Malay just wanna be a government servant and take working life easy. So this mental culture have been there since then. Moreover till today the way they work is still the same even with the KPI implementation.

In the last 10 years, through the efforts of people like RPK and the many NGOs and non-partisan people, Malaysia is slowly but surely being transformed into a more open society...
Ten years ago, Bersih type of activities were unthinkable... all activities (political or otherwise) were strictly segregated into three areas being monopolized by Malay/Chinese/Indian or UMNO/MCA/MIC. Outsiders must not get involved... This wall is being slowly taken down... Now, even the suspension of a university don will draw immediate condemnation by his peers and students from the same or other university...
Years ago, Malaysia overseas student especially the Chinese were trying their utmost to get a degree and a PR or citizenship of the country and cut off official ties from their birth place altogether. Now, they are actively engaged in the politics of their birth place and never hesitate to champion for their cause in all parts of the world....
To my Malaysia friends, you guys have given adequate signals that you could be a great country... Persevere, push on, the roads ahead will sure by bumpy, but I have no doubt that you guys will overcome all odds and reach your destination.... if I may use a proverb "Hujan emas di negeri orang, hujan batu di negeri sendiri, lebih baik negeri sendiri...."

Yes, they got degree on shoulder but then when come to apply all the knowledge to the students, you could detect the 2nd class quality in a teaching process they served. All kind of insult words came out from their mouth such as mangkok, bahalul, orang sabah bodoh, otak udang, dungu, bodoh, and many more and yet they got degrees!! spanking and embarrassing students were their expertise. Yes, it was early 80s and up to 90s.
Tuanku Pete, do not expect me to think and respect the Malays are the best race in the world!! I love Maths but every-time I see Maths...it will remind me how cruel my ex-Malay teachers. Even the Ustaz bullied me just because of being KAFIR.

Eliminate corruptions and give the billions of wastage (from the 2010 Auditor's Report) to each poor child for tuition, innovation transformation and racial integration and religious moderation. You will see the results in the next 10-15yrs.
1. Civic/Religious Study: Integrate Pendidikan Moral and Pendidikan Islam into one class. Provide general religious study introduction to all students. Let religion choices to be an independent choice of each Malaysian. Does it matter if a Chinese convert to Islam or a Malay convert to Christian or an Indian convert to Buddhist? Respect the choice of each individual after all what you belief is between you and God! What is more important is not how many Islam or how many Buddhist or Christian people in Malaysia but "How many good quality Malaysians we can produce to propel our nations to be a better nation".
2. SRJK need to be disbanded. We need an integrated education system. Adopt the qualiy and discipline of SRJK system into our Intergrated Education system. I'm not saying that SRJK is better than SK but if a survey is done and it is the truth then we must accept and change. One school for all Malaysians! Uphold meritrocacy all the way to university study and at the same time provide "Quality Help" to under privillege students.
3. Leave Education out from politics, Let the academia take care fully of our education system.

Various attempts have been made, under the British Raj and since, to classify the population of India according to a racial typology. After the independence, in pursuance of the Government's policy to discourage community distinctions based on race, the 1951 Census of India did away with racial classifications. The national Census of independent India does not recognize any racial groups in India.
=====================================
Nations worldwide have done away with the silly racial classification as it works against the idea of national cohesion & "Nationhood".
But in Malaysia, it appears to be "THE most important" thing!!
We had proudly stupid UMNO founding fathers who even put it in the Federal Constitution - who got stupid sons to now carry on the stupid & divisive legacy.
They knew that Malaysians in general are stupider still- and love being branded like COWS ... and horses ... and pigs ... for their owners.
Now these stupid sons, bring in more low net-worth rejects from foreign nations and include them in the racial classification for their own benefit- to which the stupider followers applaud. ... they then argue about who's the "more branded" COWS!!
THEY ACTUALLY COMPETE TO BE BRANDED on their a*ses!!
It is this stupidity & obsession with "being Malay" that's driving Malaysia down the drain ...!!
Cheers to the Malaysian cows!

Our country is backward and behind others for the last 200 years. Others look down on us but we should keep quiet and work hard, go learn from the rest of the world and improve our country. We speak up only after we catch up with the rest of the world....
As a result, that country with a 5,000 year old civilisation today sends a quarter million Chinese to study overseas annually. More than 80% of them learn overseas in Englsih. They never insist that what they learn must be translated to Chinese first even though they can call on more resources to do the translation.
The same with the other Asians with greater abilitiies and history like the Koreans, Japanese, Indians (another great civilisation left behind the last 200 years) etc.
That's because they know that more than half of the most advanced thoughts and research results are today pulbished in English even though the people involved are not native Englsih speakers - French, German, Russians, Africans, Persians, Indians, Chinese, Japanese or Koreans.
A small country with not much to show on anything and not known for endeavor nor enterprise, should do well to figure out how they can ever catch up by following the advise of a bunch of 2-legged kataks insisting on learning from all the elephants of the world in katakese...

The so call elected leaders also playing so much race cards to win votes but these plays are further damaging the brand. Easy examples are UMNO youth waving Keris and Ibrahim Ali talking nonsense.
If I am Malay, I will be very a shame of the these leaders. These are the people that give the extreme bad image of the Malay. These are the people that make Malay more difficult to find a job or doing a business. (Imagine seeing two doctors, the general assumption is that the Malay doctor is no good because they do not need the best results to get a place to study medicine)
But maybe the Malay deserves all these bad reputations because they put these leaders there in the first place.

There are many good and hardworking Malays in Malaysia or outside Malaysia. Yeah, I know, many good Malays have migrated. But, all is because of environment and lack of motivation.
- When young Malays want to dance, ini mat salleh budaya, itu haram. So, they can't do what they like to be.
- When young Malays want to do something different better than others, people will say something, which I think is PHD (perasaan hasat denki).
There are trigger point or milestone for a race to transform. Japan has Meiji (if name it correctly), Europe has Renaissance, so on and so forth. An outstanding great leader of the race must stand out to lead the race to change for better. He/she must be brave, he/she must envision, he/she must steadfast, he/she must not selfish, and he/she must keep motivate.
How to let the race to peel of the tradition bad habits, and think out of the box. Pete, I think you are the one. The thing is, it must gather some other good Malay leaders to make it as a push for the change.
"Open the mind" is the key, I think. And, to open the mind, there are long hard way to go. But, the good ending is always waiting, as usual.

Don't be racist. Racist comments will only create hate and move us all further away from actually realising the end-state of equal treatment for all Malaysians.

Our policies are race-based. To make matter worse, religions are commingled with races.
According to Malcolm Gladwell, culture play an important role in shaping the people. In small ways, he argued that our ancestors occupations shaped most of the values that we inherit today.
In his book, he mentioned that the Southern Chinese, which makes most of the overseas chinese now in South East Asia were descendants of rice farmers. In rice farming, long hours and hard work spell success. Thus, the overseas chinese carry the work ethics that success comes from long hours and hard work.
In pastoral lands, descendants of sheep-herders tend to be more territorial and honor-bound. Longer afternoon siesta, by the way.
What are the malays descendants of?
Perhaps, some answers lie in cultural background.

However, we do not have the liberty to say it unless we are prepared to face the wrath of the Malay "righteous groups".
We have even been asked to "go back to China/India" if we were not happy how Malaysia is being run. Mind, you, this happen in the Parliament. And....... this got the applause from the MPs.

I and many of my friends do not feel offended when anybody attacks my "race" or "religion". To me, it shows how shallow they are. I may be born of a particular race and be part of a particular religion. But that is not my make up. I am the product of my upbringing by my parents and the people who surround me like my close relatives and friends. So if you attack any of these as individuals, than you have picked a fight with me regardless of their race or religion or your race or religion.
Malaysians need to grow out of this ethnocentric thinking if we really want to move forward (this includes me as I still have my issues). BUT from the many responses I read here and anywhere else, it'll be another good 30-50 years before a whole generation rolls over. So while we are all by no means perfect, let us fight to deliver a better country to them.
But the good thing is the change has begun! There is hope for Malaysians.

Attitude is formed by the knowledge we possess, allowing the same knowledge to shape our thinking and beliefs. Whatever you think and believe, that's what you are. Seriously take a critical look at your mental attitudes and beliefs in this fast changing world.
Maybe it is the upbringing, the kind of environment, maybe poor examples of leadership qualities in the nation or society's leaders...? Maybe, we have underestimated Dr. Mahathir. He truly wanted the Malays to progress. Maybe, the Malays need to listen to him, as far as progress is concerned. He did bring Malaysia at par with the West in modernising Malaysia.

However, he was Malay, suppose to be handed out privilages (I guess under NEP) but was defrancished by his own people (UMNO). The economical-social problems mainly happen among the Malays - eg. Kelantan admits highest cases of HIV (albeit being more religious), bohsia, Mat Rempit, drug addiction etc... The rest (Chinese/Indians) just plod along, trying to make the best in life. Those who get more of the raw end of the deal is the Sabahans, Sarawakians & Orang Asli (proto-Malays).
Today, we say can't teach Maths & Science in English because worried the Malays will be left behind. Go to Bangsar and watch the rich Malays talk to their children.... they speak Engrand!! while the poor sods in the kampung languish without a basic proficiency in English to face the global world.
It saddens the Malaysian heart, at least my heart. If the Malays do well, the rest will do well. This is nation building. TAR had a Tan Siew Sin. A Tan Siew Sin looked up to the leadership of TAR. Today, the Malays (UMNO) disenfranchise their own and we (the rest) are caught in this political struggle while lackeys (MCA, Gerakan & MIC) sit and watch. Do the ruling Malays really care about the socio-economic problems faced by their own race?
Can PAS & PKR speaks out for their own kind and fellow Malaysians? Can DAP really represent the Chinese? This is why the Malaysian agenda must first be a Malay agenda. If the non-Malays speak out, they say we are whacking the Malays(albeit its true looking at MT comments from readers. Very racist in tone). Among the Malays, there are many brillant thinkers - RPK, Haris Ibrahim, Hassimuddin Rais, Karim Raslan, Azmi Sharom, Din Merican, Dato' Mohd. Arif Sabri etc. They must form the third force coalition with the rest to reform Malaysia for Malaysians.

Being a malay, I feel your pain. The problem with us, the malay, is that the majority of malays are ignoramus and those who are enlightened or open minded are small in numbers. The situation is totally opposite the malay pepatah "sebab nila setitik, rosak susu sebelanga". The situation that we have now is akin to a bowl of milk being peed upon by so many idiot malays. Its thousand time worse than a drop of nila!
To make matter worse, these idiots malays deluded themselves into believing that they are pious muslims who are destined for heaven even though they know zilch about Islam and its principle of existence (and no matter how sinful and corrupt they are, they will be given a place in heaven). They deluded themselves into believing that performing the hajj and praying 5 times a day would ensure their happy and blissful ever after even though they are the worse sinners and corrupt human being while on earth. And because of their ignorance, many malays do not realize this fact and are oblivious to the true nature of their character and faith. To many malays, ignorance is bliss and they will fight tooth and nail to protect their ignorance and their supposedly "here after bliss in heaven"! And that is why, after so many decades of abuses and corruption, the malays and Malaysia is still ruled by criminals and crooks! ONLY idiots and fools would hand over their live and liberty to crooks and criminals and the malays are the biggest fools of them all! And just like fools, the malays need to be whack all the time too since they are too stupid to learn!

The truth isn't hurtful if you accept it and vow to improve to betterment!

Also, as xlandjy said, other races have their share of issues too. However I do think that the Malays could have progressed far better if given the right education from the start. What we have today is two generations of mental poisoning that might take at least another generation to reverse if not two or more.

But if Chua Soi Lek were to stand for election against Nizar I am sure most Chinese will vote for Nizar instead of CSL

Trap like fishes, swimming in circles in a bowl, the only way out is to be liberal and colour blind, otherwise keep swimming in circles and suffer while crooks and thieves rule

I am a Chinese and I hate japanese killed Chinese in WWII, but I admire how these short guys can stand up tall and fast in 20 years after a dust biting surrender... The same goes to Germans. We cannot afford not to learn from them.
All races learn from the values and merits of others, to heal their weakness, avoid the stupidity of humanity, like what RPK illustrated all the while.
But sad to see a pompous beruk of Bodohland, got the guts to instigate interpolis to take the Cream of Malay to his kampung zoo's "justice cage". Also, a sheer shame to Malay, to see Mat sabu being summoned to court case.

I think this is the problems with you Malaysians and also with us Singaporeans. Pl note, I am saying Malaysians. I am not referring to Malays.
Both sides of the causeway have the same ruling party for half a century. They were all subjected to the same Divide and Rule. Both ruling parties exploited the racial segregation to their own benefits. Whilst they verbally called for multi racialism and integration; in their heart and mind, they try their very best to keep the people apart.
After long some many years, the people of both sides speak and think like UMNO and our PAP. They think and write everything in racial terms. Even for your DAP, when their talk about racial equality, they immediately follow with equal treatment to the Chinese in economic policy and civil service. What about other havenots who are not Chinese?
Even for you RPK, there are Malays who are not so diligent; but there are diligent Malays. It is the same for Chinese and Indians; who also have their fair share of diligent and not diligent people. So, if you wanna whack lazy people; just go ahead to whack them. Why confine only to the Malays...
I am sure if you have the last plate of rice and faced with two other hungry persons; you would generously share with them... I am sure you would go ahead and share with them without looking at their skin right...
To build a new Malaysia and Singapore.. first we have to do away with the tinted glass.. and it start with you and me.

What my Malay friends and family have to do now is believe in themselves that they can make themselves better by not getting a helping hand every time.I have very good Malay friends who are literally struggling to survive everyday but I don't see UMNO helping them..
Let me tell you a story, my brother's childhood Malay friend(all his friends are Malays and we speak Malay at home to each other) whom I knew since he was a little kid, got a girl pregnant a few years ago.He wanted to marry he but when they went to the religious dept, they told them that they have done a mistake bla bla then they said there was an issue wt the girl's birth cert that her birth doesn't tally with the length of her mother's pregnancy!! Can you believe that?? They thought she was born out of wedlock when it was clear to me that the mother obviously got pregnant before she married her father..so bodoh lar..the parents didn't want to acknowledge this to the Haji in the religious dept and insisted she was born prematurely...
In the end, my bro's friend and his girlfriend couldn't get married and make the baby legal, so the baby was born and she was given a birth cert saying she was illegal and her own biological father had to "adopt" her..after some more bla bla and the girl's father angkat sumpah tht she was really his daughter, some more bla bla, then some kursus perkahwinan and the baby was already 6 months old, they finally got married...in between this time I took care of their kid sometime and bought them things cuz NOBODY wanted to help them!
What was the whole point of this exercise and hooha in the end? I didn't understand when all they wanted to do is get married and people just gave them a hard time cuz they had sex...anyways, they have 2 kids now and still struggling with no help from their parents before and after their marriage and no help from the govt...they live in Subang Jaya and not in some kampung..
The point of my story is...yeah....50 years of NEP and this is the progress in mentality..btw, my brother has best best friends who are Malays and who are always lepakking in my house...some of them rich, some of them poor and his friend's family consider him as their son and he was the main man at his best friend's wedding...but I do know they didn't vote for BN last elections..
I only see "Malay" when it comes to UMNO and all the nonsence articles in our media..when I'm at home and I deal with my Malays, I find that they are my family/friends and nothing more...I don't even see the "Malayness" in them...am I the only non-Malay who feel that way? So where is the racial division that UMNO is always talking about?
