It is the Musharaf camp, already blamed by the party of Bhutto for the murder that gains from the situation. Musharaf can once again call for emergency rule and remain in power indefinitely with a possible postponement of the upcoming elections due January 8. Her murder is a direct warning to Musharaf that the U.S. is not the one running Pakistan!
The killing of Benazir Bhutto, former Prime Minister of Pakistan on Thursday, December 27, 2007 is not a surprise but it is devastating to the Bhutto family and to Pakistan altogether. The daughter of a formidable political figure in Pakistan, Bhutto was allowed in Pakistan after a deal brokered by the U.S. and General Musharaf in which she was to become the country’s next Prime Minister while the general remained in power.
