Rioting suspects detained


(Bernama) KUALA KANGSAR (Malaysia) – POLICE detained another suspect in relation to the rioting when Datuk Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir was sworn-in as the new Menteri Besar of Perak in Kuala Kangsar on Wednesday.

Perak police chief Datuk Zulkifli Abdullah said the man, aged 54, was picked up in Pantai Remis today and would be brought to the Kuala Kangsar Magistrate's Court tomorrow so that a remand order could be obtained against him.

His arrest, together with that of four others including a woman whose pictures were carried by the media, was made possible with the help of the public, he told a press conference at the Kuala Kangsar police headquarters here.

Zulkifli also furnished the photo fit pictures of five suspects, aged between 20 and 59 years, who are alleged to be responsible for the rioting.

He said nine men, aged between 22 and 55 years, who were detained earlier pertaining to the case were released on police bail yesterday and today and would likely be charged in the Kuala Kangsar Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

In the incident, four Federal Reserve Unit policemen were injured while two police vehicles after being attacked with stones by the rioters.

On the many police reports lodged against DAP chairman Karpal Singh for allegedly insulting royalty by stating that he planned to take legal action against Sultan Azlan Shah of Perak for allowing the Barisan Nasional to form the new government in the state following the Pakatan Rakyat losing its majority in the legislature, Zulkefli said the case was being dealt with by Kuala Lumpur police because Karpal Singh made statements to the effect there.

He added that police were also going through the many police reports lodged against Pakatan Rakyat leaders for allegedly making seditious statements.

The latest was lodged by Perak MIC Youth head G. Shamugavelu against Karpal Singh and Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin, who refused to step down as Menteri Besar to make way for Zambry, at the Ipoh police headquarters today.

Shamugavelu urged the police to take action against the duo for causing tension in the state. — BERNAMA
