DEMO AT KARPALS OFFICE – A POLICE ACT

I was in Petaling Jaya Magistrates Court this morning when I received news of an intended demo at Mr Karpal’s office by UMNO Youth. I wasn’t surprised as UMNO Youth is an organization which isn’t capable of better. Its leaders use the movement to show their real radical side, to win support of its own members and to threaten others around it, particularly its coalition members.

I went to Mr Karpal’s office at about 9.45am. There were police officers everywhere. Many were standing along a road which connected Mr Karpal’s office to Maybank tower. We asked the officer in charge of the operation to come inside and explain to us what was to happen. He told us UMNO Youth was planning to march to Mr Karpal’s office from Maybank Tower. He said they were gathering there as we spoke and were about to make their way soon. Mr Karpal asked if they had a police permit to gather and march as planned. The officer to the amazement of us all sheepishly said ‘no’.

How was it that the police, being aware that this was to be an illegal assembly and procession would merely sit back and watch? Was it not their duty to disperse the group at Maybank itself? Why wait for them to march knowing it was illegal? Would it not be open for one, given the circumstances, to say we had a case of the police aiding and abetting an illegal act?
