PDRM Surpasses Interpol Standard

(Bernama) – The Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) solved about 44 percent of crime cases last year, surpassing the standard set by Interpol.

Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Musa Hassan said the achievement was better than the 39.26 percent cases solved in 2007.

"This proves PDRM's credibility in fighting crime. The percentage of crime cases solved by Malaysian police last year is higher than Interpol's 20 percent.

"We only solved 32.53 percent of cases reported in 2006," he said at PDRM's monthly gathering at Bukit Aman police headquarters here Monday.

Musa attributed the strong performance to the policing community and crime prevention patrols aimed at strengthening ties between the people and police.

He said Malaysia's crime index had also dropped by 0.98 percent with 209,000 cases reported last year compared to 211,000 cases in 2007.

Eight states recorded lower crime rates namely Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Perak, Kedah, Johor, Penang, Negeri Sembilan and Melaka.

"Police personnel can expect a more challenging year due to the economic slowdown. Unemployment and retrenchment will have a bearing on the crime index," said Musa.
