PKR to decide after rep returns from break

(The Star) KUALA LUMPUR: The PKR leadership has decided to ask Bukit Lanjan assemblyman Elizabeth Wong to go on leave to avoid any pressure on her.

Its de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said he supported Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim’s request for Wong to go on a “short break” instead of accepting her resignation.

“We have asked her to reconsider all her options. After the break, I will meet her again to further discuss the issue,” he told reporters after chairing the PKR pre-council meeting at Parliament House here yesterday.

On her tendering her resignation, Anwar said he has left it to the Selangor PKR to decide whether to accept it or not.

He said Pakatan Rakyat leaders have also agreed to leave it to PKR to make a decision about Wong’s status.

Anwar said Wong was an important leader in the state government with a good track record.

He condemned the revelation of photographs of Wong which showed her in revealing poses.

“This is a nasty, humiliating personal attack on her and we have seen this pattern of attack in Perak, Kedah and now, in Selangor,” he said.

When asked what proof he had that Barisan was behind the circulation of Wong’s photos, Anwar said several blogs had made the link.

Besides asking Wong to go on leave, Khalid, who confirmed receiving Wong’s resignation letter as assemblyman and executive council member, said he would seek Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah’s advice on how to deal with the current situation.

Khalid, who released a one-page media statement, said he would also brief the Sultan on what had transpired.

He said it was unfortunate that certain quarters had resorted to underhanded tactics to smear Wong’s reputation and integrity.

According to a source from Khalid’s office, the request to seek an audience with Sultan Sharafuddin was still in progress.
