DAP chairman and Bukit Gelugor MP Karpal Singh today publicly played an audio recording, allegedly that of Chief Justice Tan Sri Zaki Azmi saying that he had to pay bribes when he was a practising lawyer to get things done.

yesterday.

Karpal played the recording during a press conference at Parliament lobby but refused to disclose the source of and the date he obtained the recording.

He said it will be handed over to the police if he is called up for a statement.

In the tape, a male voice was heard saying: "It took me six months to be nice, to bribe each and every individual to get back into their good books before our files were attended to. That was my personal experience, I am telling this to all clerks and all the registries to stop this nonsense."

This was the same quote attributed to Zaki in a report in the New Straits Times on Nov 7 last year.

According to Karpal, the recording was of Zaki’s speech at a convention in Kuching last November on "Integrity, the Catalyst of Sustainable Development".

However, in a response published by the same newspaper, Zaki had said the reporter misinterpreted what he said.

He also said he had never bribed or received any bribes in his life.

Karpal had made many calls for the removal of Zaki as the Chief Justice on the strength of what he had said, but no action has been taken.

He said there was no police investigation even after he had lodged a police report on Nov 13.

Karpal had also written to the prime minister on Dec 8 on the matter and to Zaki on Dec 16.

He had also written to the King calling upon the Conference of Rulers to reconsider the appointment of Zaki on Jan 14.
