Govt won’t tolerate any abuse of power, says Najib

(NST) KUALA LUMPUR: No one in government service will be spared if he or she is involved in any abuse of power.

This assurance was given by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

"If any individual at any organisation is found to have abused his or her powers, we will take appropriate action.

"But proper investigations have to be undertaken first," he said after chairing the Cabinet Committee on Indian Affairs at Parliament House yesterday.

Najib was commenting on the incident in Kampung Kemunting, Kulim, where six armed robbers were gunned down in a shootout with police last Wednesday.

Those killed were identified as S. Gurusamy, 50, from Selama, Perak; S. Vadivalan, 29, and Santana Eku Joseph, 34, both from Taman Kenari, Kulim; R. Elanggovan, 42, from Kulim; Panir Selvam, 28, from Taman Tunku Putera, Kulim; and, R. Delit Kumar, 20, from Taman Remia, Bukit Mertajam, Penang.

Politicians and non-governmental organisations criticised the police over the incident, prompting Federal Criminal Investigations Department director Datuk Seri Bakri Zinin to lash out at the parties for stirring up racial sentiments.

On another matter, Najib quashed rumours that the Umno elections and general assembly, which were scheduled from March 24 to 28, would be postponed to prepare for the April 9 by-elections in Bukit Gantang, Perak and Bukit Selambau in Kedah.

"Siapa kata? (Who said so?)," he asked. "It's on, as scheduled."
