Eli Wong case: Selangor Sultan leaves it to Khalid

(Suara keADILan) – The Sultan of Selangor has decided to leave the fate of KeADILan politician Elizabeth Wong to Selangor Menteri Besar Khalid Ibrahim.

The Ruler, who expressed sadness over the controversy that threatened to derail her promising career, said he was confident that Khalid would make a wise move that took into account the interests of the people.

Sultan Saharfuddin Idris Shah’s decision to rise above the gutter politicking that has ensued will be widely cheered and appreciated by Eli’s constituents and supporters, who yesterday presented a petition of 10,000 signatures to Khalid.

Residents from both Bukit Lanjan and Bukit Antarabangsa – where Eli and her team worked tirelessly to alleviate the hardship caused by a landslide earlier this year – had petitioned that the popular assemblywoman be allowed to keep her state seat and executive councillor post.

Royal generosity of spirit and fair-play

Nevertheless, a question-mark still hangs over whether Eli will accede to their wishes and those of her party to stay.

The 37-year Bukit Lanjan assemblywoman had offered to resign both posts after pictures of her in partial undress and asleep were illegally distributed around town.

Said Tian Chua, KeADILan information chief: “The Sultan did the right thing. He also expressed his sympathy and thereby indirectly lent his support to Eli at a time when all doors appeared to closing down on her.

“Her constituents and supporters will be very grateful to His Majesty for this fair-play and generosity of spirit.”

Police have warned that doctored pictures of her are still being circulated on the Internet and through hand-phones.

So far, police say they have only two photos of her and believe the rest are being distributed for either profit or ulterior purposes.
