ATTACK IN PARLIAMENT, ATTACK ON DEMOCRACY


Did you see what just happened? No, it wasn’t only an attack on Mr Karpal Singh the Chairman of DAP in Parliament. It was an attack on the entire Parliamentary institution and what the democratic process stands for.

It was clearly a showing of the lacking ability of Parliament to provide its own members with the protection they need in order to be effective. MPs must feel safe in Parliament, where they are to speak without fear or favour having the best interests of not only their constituents but also the entire nation at heart. But what of a Parliament which allows for those who don’t like what you say to just go there and assault you?

I expressed great anger at the security guards and the police officers when I got to Parliament this afternoon. These people salute you when you walk into Parliament house but when it came to the crunch, they did nothing. They let that which they were to stop happen and they did so looking on. It was raining heavily and I received information that Mr Karpal had been surrounded and attacked at the doorsteps of Parliament House. I arrived there not much later. To my surprise, the group who stalked him were still there. It was shameful. A few members of the Dewan Rakyat had just been assaulted by outsiders and they were still there waiting.
