17 Supporters Of Uthayakumar Released

(Bernama) — Seventeen people including a political leader detained by police in an illegal rally at Brickfields police headquarters yesterday have been released on police bail.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Wira Mohammad Sabtu Osman said today, the 17 including Kapar member of parliament S. Manikavasagam were released after their statements were recorded at 6.30pm yesterday.

"The 17 people detained and later released yesterday are being investigated under section 27 of the Police Act 1967," he said.

They were among supporters of P. Uthayakumar who attended an illegal rally to lodge a police report on the treatment given to the Internal Security Act (ISA) detainee.

Police had to spray chemical laced water and tear gas to disperse the 300 demonstrators after repeated warnings to disperse were ignored.
