‘Act quickly against those who bring up position of rulers’

(NST) – The police should expedite investigations against individuals who raise issues involving the position of Malay rulers, Umno vice-president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said.

He said the present laws, including the Sedition Act, were sufficient to act against them but authorities needed to be firm and act fast.

"For example, in the case of Karpal Singh, many police reports have been lodged as he had challenged the authority of the Sultan of Perak.

"Some of the things he said was seditious. Police and the attorney-general's chambers should act swiftly. Prolonging action will further aggravate the current political climate," he said after meeting Umno members in Panchor near here.

On whether the Internal Security Act should be used, Muhyiddin, who is international trade and industry minister, said it might not be suitable in the present condition, adding that there were other laws which could be used.

Muhyiddin also said the government should resolve issues quickly to avoid demonstrations.
