Ong: Assess MCA over the past year

(The Star) – Malaysians should give the MCA a chance by assessing its performance in the past one year, said party president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat.

Regardless of who the voters had voted for in the March 8 general election last year, he said that it was time to look ahead.

“I admit that the party is facing some difficulties after losing so many state and parliamentary seats in the general election last year.

“However, I hope the voters will look at the long term as MCA is still relevant and has an important role to play in the Government.

“We will continue to introduce new measures and initiate changes to face the challenges ahead,” he said in his speech at a dinner with the grassroots of the Indera Mahkota MCA division at Vistana Hotel here on Saturday.

Also present were Pahang MCA chairman Datuk Hoh Khai Mun, state deputy chairman Datuk Seri Lam Kam Sang, state secretary Datuk Fong Koong Fuee, division chairman Datuk Pang Tsu Ming and Pahang Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry president Tan Sri Pheng Yin Huah.

Ong, who is also Transport Minister, urged all party leaders and members not to give up and to continue to serve the people to the best of their abilities.

Although the party wore the Government hat, he gave an assurance that it would continue to represent the voice of the people at large.

“Always stand up for the needs of the people and put their welfare at heart,” he stressed.

Meanwhile, in his speech, Hoh said the state MCA would give its full support to Ong to initiate reforms and changes in the party.

“It is very important to support the leadership and remain united in this crucial time.

“We must stand together and try to win back the hearts and confidence of the people,” he said.

Pang said the division would continue to serve the people and find ways to resolve their problems.

Later, Ong presented souvenirs to recipients of state awards including Pang and division deputy chairman Jack How, who both received Datukships from the Sultan of Pahang.
