Sedition, ISA, etc. Are we an authoritarian state yet?

Bukit Gelugor member of parliament Karpal Singh was charged with sedition in Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court 5 this morning. The DAP veteran was charged in relation to his threat to sue the Perak ruler over the political crisis in the state. More charges are leveled at most opposition factions in recent days then anywhere in the world in Malaysia.

Accusations, crimes, suing, defaming, damning, harsh words, sedition, ISA, police brutality, cover ups, murders, conspiracies, bribing, threats, the list goes on and on. These are the most frequently used words heard almost everyday in our damning lives in recent days.

If it's not the opposition making accusations and remarks, it's the ruling party making their moves to quell all from ever speaking against or about what they deem as relevant in their survival. The state of Malaysian politics is now at the highest peak of darkness, all the government moves speak of an authoritarian like state, just like what the N.Koreans are doing. The present government is highly controlling and severely limits freedom of expression and participation of its citizens in government (see Human rights in North Korea).

In 2006, the DAP, which had been a vocal opponent of the Sedition Act and the Internal Security Act (ISA), filed a police report against UMNO, whose annual general assembly had been noted for its heated rhetoric, with delegates making statements such as "Umno is willing to risk lives and bathe in blood to defend the race and religion. Don't play with fire. If they (non-Malays) messed with our rights, we will mess with theirs." In response, Information Minister at the time said that this indicated that the Sedition Act continued to remain relevant to Malaysian society. He also denied that the government intentionally used the act to silence dissent or to advance particular political interests.
