Police Maintain Security At Menara Datuk Onn

(Bernama) — A commotion created by supporters of Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam prompted the police to deploy a team at the Menara Datuk Onn, here where the Umno headquarters is located.

The commotion started when talks that the Umno Disciplinary Board would take disciplinary action on Mohd Ali, who is also an Umno vice-president, became a reality when the decision was announced by board chairman, Tan Sri Tengku Ahmad Rithauddeen Tengku Ismail at 4 pm.

Dang Wangi OCPD ACP Zulkarnain Abdul Rahman, when contacted, said a police team had started maintaining watch at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) since 2 pm.

"The situation was under control and no undesired incidents occurred. However, we will continue to maintain security for as long as the situation deems it necessary," he said.

A check by Bernama found that about 20 supporters of Mohd Ali had started to gather near the entrance to Menara Datuk Onn since 3 pm.

They were said to have gathered there to give support to Mohd Ali's leadership while chanting 'Long Live Ali Rustam' several times.

One of the supporters, Amran Ahmad said that besides giving moral support to Mohd Ali, they were also unhappy with the decision of the board that prohibited the Melaka Chief Minister from contesting in the party election next week.

The group, however, dispersed peacefully beginning at 6 pm. A total of 50 police personnel were deployed to maintain security in the area.
