Karpal Took The Wrong Route

Police said Karpal took the wrong route and thats why his car was pelted with water bottle. I wonder why do the police issue such statement when in fact they are responsible for safety of everybody.

Why then was his car allowed to take that route when there are police personnel all over the place and did not direct Karpal's driver to follow the correct route allocated for PR. Was it not for the man manning the traffic to show the way because I am sure the police knew whose car it is and who is inside.
