Quotes from Bukit Gantang by-election candidates

By Sharon Tan (The Edge)

What the candidates say:

Datuk Seri Nizar Jamaluddin (PAS):
"This is an election for Malaysia. This is a referendum not just for Bukit Gantang and Perak to say that we don't want any administration that does not follow the laws.

"We want a society where the rule of law dominates. Malaysians should reject any party that does not appreciate or respect the laws.

"We want Malaysia to respect the separation of powers, constitutional monarchy and also parliamentary democracy. We hope the election here would show respect for all races and (that) there be no discrimination. This is what Malaysians want — good governance. We don't want (illegal) seizing of power or kidnapping or violence.

"What is happening in Perak is a conflict between truth and falsehood. Pakatan Rakyat represents the truth and falsehood is represented by those who seized power and are involved in abuse of powers."

Ismail Saffian (Barisan Nasional)
"I am thankful for the support given by the many Cabinet ministers and BN supporters from all over the country. I am from Bukit Gantang and I know the culture of the place well, (I hope) the voters will support me."

Kamarul Ramizu Idris (Independent)
"I want to implement the concept of masyarakat beriman (pious community). I will ask the mosques to hold various activities for the community. If I win, I will establish a special organisation to provide social services. I am contesting because I feel the call to correct problems (such as rude individuals and leaders, alcoholism and gambling) in society.

"I am not nervous about BN and Pakatan Rakyat that have big machinery and media because with the help of God I can win.

"I am not sponsored by anyone, I am using my own money. I have a small budget but I have about 1,000 volunteers who are helping me. I will campaign face to face with voters to explain to them my concept of politik beriman (pious politics)."
