Again, move on Mahathir


THE rekindling of the relationship between former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad and Umno was not a surprise when his successor Abdullah Ahmad Badawi ended his tenure recently.

So too Mahathir's change of attitude towards the national political leadership and everything else linked to the party. He is suddenly no longer someone to be avoided like the plague.

But while he is definitely more warm towards new PM Najib Razak and everyone else, Mahathir is not about to truly go into retirement, to spend more time with his grandchildren, as he had stated on his retirement in late 2003. Mahathir will continue to have an opinion on everything, regardless whether his views contradict his calls when he was PM.

A few weeks ago Mahathir said that Najib should only appoint the clean to his Cabinet but just like everyone else, he did not define clearly what he meant by clean. But Mahathir did say that during his time he removed those who were thought to be not clean. On this I said I disagreed because much as I have tried to look for the names, I could not find any, apart from those who were asked to go when allegations against them made the political situation difficult. Others who almost everyone perceived to be not clean remained on board in the federal administration and in the states, with most re-appointed each time there was a reshuffle.
