Uthayakumar: ‘I will not turn up at Kamunting camp on Tuesday’


(The Star) – Hindraf leader P. Uthayakumar will not attend the advisory panel at Kamunting Detention Camp scheduled for Tuesday.

Uthayakumar said he did not see the necessity of returning to the camp as he regarded himself released from the Internal Security Act (ISA) unconditionally.

“I follow the law and I am a free man,’’ he said after conducting prayers at Sri Subramaniaswamy Temple in Batu Caves here Sunday.

He said when he was released, he had been asked to sign some conditions but he had refused.

Uthayakumar did not reveal the terms and conditions he was asked to sign but said “If I had signed, I would not be here today and I cannot go to my mother’s house in Seremban.”

He reiterated that he had done no wrong.

“Only if an open court finds me guilty, am I willing to accept the punishment,’’ he said.

He also called on the government to release the remaining about 10 detainees at the detention camp, as well as to abolish ISA.

He also said he would announce Hindraf’s next course of action at a gathering soon.

“We have yet to find a venue for it,’’ he said.

Meanwhile, Hindraf supporters gathered at Batu Caves to show thei support for Uthayakumar who was relased last Saturday and had gone to the Sri Subamaniaswamy Temple on Sunday to conduct prayers.

He had earlier cut his hair at a river some 300m away before returning to the temple for the prayers.

Uthayakumar said he would continue to fight for the rights of the people.

He said he hoped to meet Barisan Nasional leaders to find out their short-and long-term plans.

There were no uniformed police personnel present.
