Nazri: Strictly no Hindraf-linked rally or activities

(The Star) PUTRAJAYA: Anyone taking part in an illegal rally or protesting in the name of the banned Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) will have to face police action, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz said.

Nazri said that holding rallies without a police permit or holding any type of gathering in the name of a banned organisation was against the law and the police would not hesitate to take action.

“They can say what they want but if they hold activities in the name of the movement, (Hindraf) like protesting in its name or wearing T-shirts or holding up banners with its name, the police can act. No one in this country is above the law – you break the law, you face the music,” he told a press conference after attending the Prime Minister’s Department’s legal affairs division excellence services awards presentation ceremony here yesterday.

He was commenting on talk that supporters of the banned movement might organise a gathering to call for the ban on Hindraf to be lifted and protest against the police order asking former Internal Security Act (ISA) detainee P. Uthayakumar to appear before the ISA advisory panel.

Commenting on a call by Hindraf leader P. Waythamoorthy to lift the ban on Hindraf because the release of all five Hindraf leaders from ISA proved the movement was not a threat to national security, he said the release of the detainees and the ban on the movement were separate matters.

Nazri likened the situation with that of the banned Communist Party of Malaya long ago.

He said the members of the party were allowed to go free but the ban on the organisation itself was never lifted.
