View From Abroad- Defeated by the law
Jogging down the street early one morning in the Cheras section of Kuala Lumpur, I heard some yells, screams, and I could see quite a bit of movement.
I couldn’t tell what was going on as the morning sun was only starting to rise. As I ran closer, I saw that a man on the ground was being beaten by two other men with sticks. I picked up my pace a bit to get nearer as it seemed that he had no other way of defending himself. By the time I reached the scene, the two men had left for their car and the victim was sitting on the ground cursing at them in Chinese. His bloody and broken ankle was busting through the skin as residents of the neighborhood slowly came out of their houses to see what all of the commotion was. I stuck around to make sure he was okay, but left when the police showed up. They came in an unmarked car and never identified themselves as police; but the people in the neighborhood assured me that they were.
One night a few months back I was walking down the street talking on my cell phone and as I was turning down a backstreet I saw two motorbikes stop. The passengers on the back jumped off. I couldn’t see what happened right away because there was a car blocking my view. However, the sound of screams from two girls made it obvious to me what had happened. These boys had just robbed two girls. They jumped on their bikes, and headed towards me, which then caused me to jump behind a car. A second later I saw two girls crying and running towards me. I gave them my phone to use and they called their friend to get them, not the police.
