Can Anwar Fool 6.8 billion people?

Anifah Aman, the foreign minister was quoted saying that Malaysians should be “very, very hurt” by what was published in New Yorker and continued to say “Malaysian who do not feel embarrassed, is not Malaysian”. This of course comes soon after Malaysians had to feel embarrassed by his comments at the U.S. State Department in Washington about Anwar.

An article in today’s papers mentioned Hishamuddin Hussien, the minister of home affairs, as saying that Anwar was “trying to fool the world” regarding the status of his personal freedom.

Mukhriz Mahathir was reported to comment that Anwar liked to “cry wolf”.

All this, of course, is nothing new. Anwar gets attacked whenever he speaks overseas or when foreign media publishes his comments about leaders in the Malaysian government. Unlike Anwar, prestigious universities like the London School of Economics do not invite many BN leaders, to speak on important and interesting issues, especially in their personal capacities as someone worth listening to. The fact that foreigners give airtime to Anwar does not go down well with BN leaders.

To all intents and purposes, in eyes of BN leaders, Anwar is an enemy of Malaysia. He is deemed by them to be a non-nationalist, bent on destroying the country. He flies all over the world to blacken the image of Malaysia and when he speaks at rallies in the peninsula, where sometimes 50,000 people come to hear. This man wastes his time and money to fulfill his sadistic notion of destroying a nation of 26 million. This Anwar must be a lunatic. The millions at home who come to his ceramahs must be equally crazy.

When was the last time Hishamuddin, Anifah and Mukhriz manage to muster a mammoth crowd (a fact admitted to by Hishamuddin in today’s papers) to address, in their personal capacities as politicians?

Anwar is the biggest threat to BN’s survival. He has proven it by succeeding in uniting an extremely fractious opposition into a cohesive force that denied the BN two-thirds majority in parliament. No mean act for someone who spent 6 years inside a prison on trumped-up charges, which was later, annulled by the courts.

Would it not be fair to suggest that Anwar’s personal safety is in doubt? If he disappears into a KL storm drain during a deluge, or gets hit by a falling skyscraper, who do we think will give sighs of relief?
