PAS women spurn co-operation with Umno

(Bernama) – The PAS Dewan Muslimat or women’s wing today rejected the idea of the party cooperating with Umno and the unity government proposed by the party president.

The wing’s deputy chief Siti Zailah Mohd Yusof said such an idea should be scrutinised so that the PAS top leadership was not viewed as sending a wrong message to the people.

“PAS can survive on its own without having to depend on or being taken for a ride by Umno,” she said when winding up the debate at the party’s 55th general assembly at Malawati Stadium, here, today.

The newly elected PAS leadership line-up was also urged to strengthen the party’s relations with its allies in the opposition pact and make proper planning in the opposition-led states and states it would wrest.

“The leaders must show determination to strengthen the opposition pact,” she said.

Siti Zailah, who is also Rantau Panjang Member of Parliament, also questioned the role played by the party’s disciplinary board, especially during party polls.

“We do not want any negative elements to grow in the party,” she added.

Meanwhile, PAS Supporters Club deputy chairman Vincent Lee said they lauded the proposal to make the club a new PAS wing.

At the same time, he also reminded the PAS leadership to be more sensitive on issues involving non-Muslims as it could be used by both Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN) to destroy the party.

He said the 13th general election would be a matter of life and death for Umno and BN. “Hence, they will do anything (to win), whether it’s halal or haram (legitimate or forbidden by Islam),” he said.

He also reminded the PAS elected representatives to meet the people at the grassroots more regularly as they had been complaining that their elected representatives were hardly seen.

“If this situation persists, the people will take the best way out, that is, not to vote for them anymore,” he added.
