Senator among three UMNO men quizzed by MACC
(The Star) KUALA LUMPUR: A senator is among three Umno politicians who are being investigated by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for alleged graft in the construction of the Middle Ring Road Two’s (MRR2) troubled section.
The three, who hold important posts in the party in their respective states, are being quizzed by an MACC special task force.
Two of them are said to be division leaders while the other is a division treasurer.
The three are among several people being investigated in connection with alleged corruption involving the taking over of the project by one company from another.
Sources said investigations into the three politicians’ alleged involvement in demanding and accepting more than RM3mil from the company that took over the project from them was almost completed.
A decision to charge them or otherwise would be made in the next 48 hours.
They said the investigation papers had been submitted to the MACC director of legal and prosecution for him to make a decision.
MRR2 is one of the Federal Government’s projects to help ease traffic congestion in the city centre.
The investigations started in August 2004 when the media highlighted cracks on the pillars of an elevated stretch of the highway.
The 1.7km flyover on the RM238.8mil troubled stretch of MRR2 had to be closed.
About RM70mil was spent to correct the problem.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz, meanwhile, said the Government would not interfere in the MACC’s investigations.
“I give my assurance to MACC that they will be free to take any action regardless of who the suspects are or which party they are from,” he said in Kuantan.
