‘Manik Urai just the beginning’

(NST) KOTA BARU: The opposition's desperate political ploys since after the last March 8 general election could be put to rest in Manik Urai, says Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal.

He believes the rakyat, particularly the Malays, are sick and tired with the opposition's antics.

With Umno re-emerging as a solid team with its fellow Barisan Nasional partners, Manik Urai could also mark the beginning of the much desired change towards a truly progressive Kelantan, he said.

"This is a good opportunity for us, provided we are united and move as a solid team. It's an opportunity not only for Umno and BN but more so for the people of Kelantan. The Kelantanese have the chance to chart the future of Malay and Malaysian politics.

"Umno is all for unity and we are not sowing the seeds of disunity like others are. We want not only Malays but all the various races in this country to unite as unity is the only way forward for us as a nation of diverse population.

"I believe that we are all in one family, even if our political beliefs might differ," Shafie told more than 2,000 Manek Urai BN members and supporters who had gathered at the launch of BN's election machinery.

While urging party leaders, members and supporters to go all out to woo the voters in Manik Urai, he advised them not to be taken in by the opposition's aggressive and provocative tactics.

"Just don't play their dirty game. Remember that we have a duty to explain our collective vision to the people and assure them that Umno and BN will always be there for them. We don't hide behind anything, religion or race.

"We anticipate their usual smear campaign and here in Manik Urai they might once again brand Umno members as infidels. Pas leaders say hugging and collaborating with DAP is allowed but even the idea of holding a discussion with Umno is a sin. Isn't this arrogance in its purest form?"

The rural and regional development minister said it was timely for the people of Kelantan to gradually embrace change, after being trapped with Pas' sluggish administration for almost 20 years.

Nomination day for the Manik Urai state by-election is July 6 with polling day on July 14.
