Parliament: Kugan probe delayed

(The Star) – The Malaysian Medical Council probe into the doctor responsible for the first post-mortem report on the death of police detainee A. Kugan has stopped and will recommence only on Aug 21.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Nazri Abd Aziz told Tian Chuan (PKR-Batu) that the probe was supposed to have begun on June 19 but has been rescheduled.

“The Attorney-General’s Chambers has yet to begin the process of prosecution because it wants to obtain all evidence in relation to the case.

“This includes waiting for the results of the MMC probe,” he said in a written reply dated June 22, which was made available Wednesday.

Nazri said the A-G would only decide whether it would proceed with prosecution after it had obtained all the necessary evidence.

The inquiry was called after Kugan’s parents complained to the council, claiming that the first post-mortem was improperly done.

Kugan, 22, was detained by the police on Jan 15 for alleged car theft but died five days later while in police custody.
