Anwar: Not much has changed under Najib

Oppositon Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim believes that there have not been significant changes resulting from the prime minister’s first 100 days in office but is somewhat encouraged by the government’s economic reforms.

“The pronouncements, particularly in the economic realm, are encouraging although we have not had the opportunity to look at the details, like Ekuinas, what it means and why the need for a new agency, how transparent will it be?” he said. “These are the issues that needs to be resolved.”

Datuk Seri Najib Razak recently announced that the government will drop the 30 per cent Bumiputera equity requirement for Malaysian firms seeking public listing, the cornerstone of the New Economic Policy (NEP), as part of his new economic model.

Public listed companies will now have to offer 50 per cent of the public shareholding spread to Bumiputera investors and the government plans to cut the powers of the Foreign Investments Committee (FIC) in the acquisition of equity stakes, mergers and takeovers.
