MCA: Don’t sweep it under the carpet

(The Star) – The Selangor government has been urged to order a full-scale investigation on the purported use of an executive councillor’s office to conduct meetings with people connected with “underground business activities”.

MCA Special Task Force bureau chief Simon Lim said: “If it is used as a meeting place, the exco member is supporting such activities and the Selangor Government is condoning them if action is not taken against him.”

Wangsa Maju MP Wee Choo Keong was right in backing the call by Gombak MP Azmin Ali to reshuffle the Selangor government in light of this revelation, said Lim.

“This is a serious case and any wrongdoing should not be swept under the carpet and it appears that exco member Teresa Kok is attempting to do just that by calling for the removal of Azmin as Backbenchers Club president.

“Instead of calling for wrongdoers to be taken to task, Teresa is calling for whistleblowers to be punished,” he said, adding that Wee and Azmin should lodge police reports over their allegations. It is also the responsibility of Wee and Azmin to lodge police reports if they have information of meetings with “underground” people being held in an exco member’s office, he said.

Lim added that in the name of transparency and accountability, Wee and Azmin should also name the exco member concerned and list out details of the activities.

The Selangor Pakatan government owes the people a full explanation of the activities taking place within its administration.

MCA non-governmental organisation liaison bureau chairman Datuk Ti Lian Ker said: “It is shocking that this happened in the Pakatan Government within a year of assuming power.

“It is obvious that PAS and DAP have set high moral standards for others, in particular Barisan Nasional leaders, but they have a different set of morals and values for Pakatan leaders.”
