MACC raids service centres of Selangor DAP lawmakers

In move seen as a ploy by Prime Minister Najib Razak to topple the Pakatan Rakyat state government in Selangor, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission raided the service centres of two DAP lawmakers Ean Yong Hian Wah and Lau Weng San on Wednesday.

“They are trying to create the impression that the Pakatan government in Selangor is corrupt,” PKR MP for Batu Tian Chua told Suara Keadilan.

“This is all happening when photos of former Menteri Besar Khir Toyo’s multi-million ringgit palace are flying all around town. Yet somehow they seem to be oblivious to that.”

In an April reshuffle, Najib – then the newly-anointed Umno president – had taken over as Selangor party chief, replacing Muhammad Muhammad Taib.

Even then, eyebrows were raised and numerous analysts had warned the Pakatan to be on their guard, saying it was for certain that Najib would try to destabilise Menteri Besar Khalid Ibrahim’s administration.

In February, he had hatched a coup d’etat that toppled the Perak Pakatan government led by Nizar Jamaluddin.

Racial Overtones

Given the racial overtones in the Perak power grab, there are similarities in the latest Selangor case, which involves seven Pakatan assemblymen – all of whom are ethnic Chinese.

Apart from Ean and Lau, the other five Teresa Kok (DAP-Kinrara), Cheah Wing Yin (DAP-Damansara Utama), Elizabeth Wong (PKR-Bukit Lanjan), Hannah Yeoh (DAP-Subang Jaya) and Edward Lee (DAP-Bukit Gasing).

According to office workers at the service centres, MACC officers said they were looking for documents that showed how Ean and Lau were using their state allocations.

“I told my assistants to inform them to come to my office at the state secretariat,” Ean, the Seri Kembangan assemblyman and state executive councillor, told a press conference.

He said the MACC also called and interrogated one of the suppliers involved in his community programmes, scaring others away.

Meanwhile, Lau said six MACC officers burst into his service centre earlier today.

“I am going there right after to see what they want,” the Kampung Tunku assemblyman said.
