Trans-‘formers’, PKR?

(The Malaysian Insider) Thus far, the body count has been impressive, but they are all former leaders left along the wayside.

Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's Parti KeAdilan Rakyat (PKR) today successfully netted former Health Minister Datuk Seri Chua Jui Meng, former Senator David Yeoh Eng Hock and former Lumut MP Yap Yit Thong to his fold.

Former de-facto law minister Datuk Zaid Ibrahim had joined earlier.

Others who had joined before include MCA’s former deputy Wanita leader Dr Tan Yew Kew and former Gerakan veep Dr Tan Tee Kwong.

Possibly at some point in their political life, these people were giants in their parties or well on their way to assume positions of great importance. They did not.

And now, in the words of Chua, "I am prepared for this last hurrah of my life", he like others want another chance, another bite of the cherry, another shot at the top.

For Chua, PKR is his vehicle for that dizzying ride to the top that his own party MCA never gave for the chance beyond the vice-presidency.

He offered himself twice to lead the party he joined in 1976. They said no, and today he gave his reasons including the recent death of Teoh Beng Hock that tipped him to join “kindred spirit” Anwar for deep and genuine reforms.

All said and done, Chua is likely to get prominent post and play a role in the party, just like Zaid and the rest are doing now.

Which leaves precious little for all those who joined the then-KeAdilan on April 4, 1999 fighting for Anwar's release and for justice in a country that is used to one dominant party and coalition ruling it since 1957.
