Teoh was planning life, not contemplating death, say friends

Just a day before Teoh Beng Hock was found dead, he had been planning for his wedding, his friends and colleagues told police today, leading all of them to discount the possibility that the DAP political aide could have committed suicide.

“There is just no way he would kill himself,” Teoh’s best friend, Woo Chuan Sing, who has known Teoh for nine years, told reporters after police recorded a statement from him here today.

On Wednesday morning, a day before Teoh died, the DAP man had sent Woo a short text message asking him to be his best man during his up coming wedding on Aug 3.

The 30-year-old businessman received the text message at about 7.30am. Teoh called him up a short while later to reconfirm that he would be the best man. That was the last time the two spoke.

“He sounded normal that morning,” said Woo, who recounted how he met Teoh during community service projects while they were undergraduates at Universiti Kembangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and became fast friends.

Later the same day, Teoh was summoned to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) office at Plaza Masalam to help in ongoing investigations in allegations of misuse of funds by Selangor Pakatan Rakyat (PR) state lawmakers.

The political secretary to state executive councillor Ean Yong Hian Wah was found dead at a balcony on the fifth floor of the building at 1.30pm the next day.

The MACC maintains he was released at 3.45am but closed circuit television recordings do not show Teoh leaving the building.

The MACC also claims that Teoh was last seen at 6am resting on a settee in the office. Preliminary investigations indicate he died between 7am and 8am.
