Nazri: Government will consider motion to halve detention period

(The Star) KOTA KINABALU: The Government will take into consideration views that the 60-day detention period under the Internal Security Act (ISA) be reduced by half, said Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, who feels the ISA is necessary to ensure stability in the country, said such an amendment would ensure that the ISA was not abused.

“The ISA is a necessary law,” said Nazri after launching the Papar Umno membership recruitment drive and website in Papar town.

He said Barisan Nasional lawmakers would also not bow to any attempts by the Opposition to move a motion in Parliament to abolish the ISA.

“As long as the Barisan Nasional is leading the Government, the ISA will not be abolished,” Nazri said when asked about the anti-ISA rally in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

He claimed the rally yesterday for the abolition of the ISA was another attempt by opposition groups to undermine the administration of Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
