Partially Blind Student Sues Police, Govt For Rm10 Mln


(Bernama) — A student, who claims that a gas cannister hit his left eye which was rendered blind during a riot outside the Sultan Muhammed IV Stadium after a football match on April 7, Thursday filed a RM10 million suit at the High Court here.

Muhammad Huzaifah Muhd Noor, 18, a student of the Pengkalan Chepa Industrial Training Institute (ILP), filed the suit through his lawyer, Shaharuddin Mohamed, against ASP M. Sathasivam from the Federal Reserve Unit (FRU), the Royal Malaysia Police and the Malaysian government.

Speaking to reporters after filing the suit at the High Court Registrar's Office, Shaharuddin said the first suit filed was for general damages and the quantum would be decided by the court.

"The other suit was for aggravated and exemplary damages amounting to RM10 million while the final suit was for special damages for the plaintiff's medical costs, travelling cost to the hospital and other costs to be decided by the court," he said. On April 20, Muhammad Huzaifah had lodged a police report claiming that his left eye became blind after being hit by a gas cannister during the riot outside the Sultan Muhammed IV Stadium after a football match on April 7.

The doctor who treated Muhammad Huzaifah had confirmed that the latter's left eye could not be saved due to severe injury to the cornea and retina.

During the riot involving a group of Kelantan supporters, a police vehicle was burned while several vehicles, including the car belonging to Kelantan Football Assocation president Tan Sri Annuar Musa, were also damaged.
