EC will decide on status of Kota Siputeh State Assemblyman

(Bernama) – The Kedah Election Commission (EC) has sent a letter on the status of Kota Siputeh state assemblyman Datuk Abu Hassan Sarif to EC headquarters in Putrajaya.

Kedah EC director Zainal Abidin Zakaria said the letter by Kedah State Assembly Speaker Datuk Dr Abdul Isa Ismail claiming that Abu Hassan had lost his seat was received two days ago.

He said Dr Isa stated that Abu Hassan had lost his seat as he had failed to attend state assembly meetings on April 19 and Aug 9.

"This matter will be handled by our headquarters. The EC legal division will study it," he told Bernama here yesterday.

Abu Hassan, the Jerlun Umno division chief is a four-term state assemblyman for Kota Siputeh.

Zainal Abidin said he was still waiting for a directive from EC headquarters.

Dr Isa said under Section 51 of the state constitution, assemblymen who fails to attend two assembly sittings consecutively, automatically loses his membership and has to vacate his seat.

He is scheduled to hold a press conference on the Kota Siputeh seat at 10am tomorrow at his Wisma Darul Aman office.
