Permatang Pasir By-Election: UMNO in denial?

By Dr. Rafick

1. Last night (25/8/2009), the Permatang Pasir By election results was announced by SPRM. The results were obvious. The voter’s turnout was reduced significantly by about 9% compared to the recent general election. This resulted in both PAS and BN receiving fewer votes and reduced majority by 900 votes. Unfortunately the MSM both electronic and printed media is portraying a reverse story where it is crooning that BN is getting more popular.

2. A few important events happened recently during the by-election. Usually, PR will be screaming on top of their lungs and complaining about phantom voters but this time around and as far as I could remember, this is probably the first time UMNO (KJ, Muhyuddin and Shahrizat) publically complains about phantom voters. Why is that? Could it be that they were preparing for excuses for their impending loss? That is a question that only UMNO insider can answer.

3. Tonight on TV3 news, Muhyuddin address the issue. His answer shows that both he and UMNO are in denial. Not accepting losses on the basis of reality is dangerous. It is a sign of weakness. It is an impetus of future self destruction. I hope UMNO members sees it differently than Muhyuddin

4. It is clear to an outsider like me that UMNO did not do a proper homework in selecting their candidate. Even Mahathir sees and in a cynical manner he said that UMNO desperately wanted to lose. For the first time, it appears in the eyes of the public that there is a major flaw in UMNO selection of candidates.

5. Rohaizat was complaining that the ethnic Chinese has failed to vote him this time around and this led to his downfall. I wonder why he isn’t expecting that to him in light of publicity surrounding the death of TBH. In the Chinese newspaper, I see that the pictures of TBH parents carrying their son photo appear daily.

6. What is even worse is that the Malay mainstream media turn the death into a circus as if DAP and PR was attacking a Malay institution. The MSM also made Anwar a traitor to the Malay race on his own turf? Isn’t that is a foolish thing to do? It is a recipe for disaster and it is prepared and cooked by none other UMNO peoples themselves. Mahathir was right; UMNO wanted to lose badly!

7. Malaysia needs two strong political parties. We cannot deny history where UMNO led BN has done so much for this country. Unfortunately that was the old UMNO. The new UMNO did a lot too but at the same time their leader also profited from it. They became distant from the people. Their glaring abuse of power and position that takes place has made many people sick of them. UMNO local leaders have become so powerful that they became “Little Napoleon” in their own territory.
