How to insult the media and get away with it

Anifah Aman, the foreign minister, on Sunday revealed something that politicians do not like to be shown. And he probably did it quite unconsciously, by doing something quite ordinary. He complained about the media not doing what he wanted.

And that is one of the biggest insults the working journalist receives every day. The high and mighty do it all the time. I speak. You do. That is all.

Bernama’s report from Putrajaya on Sunday is a good example of the kind of general arrogance, misunderstanding of what news media are about, and a general contempt for the news business that many high and mighty people unconsciously display.

Foreign Minister Datuk Anifah Aman is puzzled over the Indonesian media’s refusal to accept explanation over the pendet dance issue which triggered anti-Malaysia sentiment in the republic.

The media had instead kept on harping on the issue, he told reporters.

[He said he had explained the pendet and Discovery channel blah blah to the Indonesian government, "which accepted the explanation" and he had also explained to his Indonesian counterpart.]

What this means is that:

First, Anifah expects them to shut up. I told you already. Stop complaining. And he doesn’t understand why they won’t shut up.

Second, Anifah expects them to roll over and obey. I minister. I talk. Do what I want. And he doesn’t understand why they refuse to do what he wants.
