No Malaysian driver for 1 Malaysia F1 Team

(The Malaysian Insider) SINGAPORE, Sept 26 — The 1 Malaysia F1 Team for the 2010 season is likely to feature a driver with vast F1 experience to lead the charge, so a Malaysian talent to spearhead the Lotus F1 Team in the debut season next year is unlikely to happen.

A local driver is also not on the cards until one who is ready to enter the big league and compete with the big boys of F1 can be found, according to Lotus F1 Team Principal, Datuk Seri Tony Fernandes.

For now, the search is on for a driver with the experience, temperament and the proven skills to fly the Malaysian flag next season. Which may be why Fernandes is here for the Singapore F1 Grand Prix to seek out and maybe finalise a deal to bring a proven F1 name on board.

Drivers like Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen and former world champion Fernando Alonso of the Renault, last year’s Singapore GP winner, are said to be the team’s target.

Speaking on the sidelines of the Singapore GP at the Marina Circuit here today, Fernandes said that the team is in F1 not to finish last.
