Writer IOANNIS GATSIOUNIS on his new book, and 1Malaysia

By Mark Teh

Ioannis Gatsiounis is an American writer and freelance foreign correspondent based in Kuala Lumpur. His earlier book on Malaysia, Beyond the Veneer: Malaysia’s Struggle for Dignity and Direction, was a collection of published articles from Asia Times, Newsweek, The Washington Times and Al-Jazeera.

Life as a foreign correspondent can be an interesting one – the sights, sounds, and social life of wherever one is currently located can provide many perspectives, points for reflection, and of course, ideas for stories.

This week, we speak with writer Ioannis Gatsiounis about writing stories, living in and responding to all things Malaysian, and his most recent collection of writings, Velvet and Cinder Blocks (ZI Publications).
