Samy Vellu’s revelation shocks community

(The Star) – THE Indian community is stunned with the recent revelation by MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu that MIED and AIMST have no links with MIC, reported Makkal Osai in its headlines yesterday.

The Indian community had believed that the Maju Institute of Education Development was the educational arm of the party and Asian Institute of Medicine, Science and Technology was an MIC-owned university.

Samy Vellu, in an interview with a daily news portal on Friday, said that both MIED and AIMST were NGOs set up in his personal capacity when the Government, under Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, failed to extend aid to the Indian community.

Former MIC veteran Datuk V. Govindaraj said Samy Vellu’s statement would cause an uproar among the Indian community when they realise that the MIC president had used them for his benefit.

He said MIC branches throughout the country had collected funds from the community to set up AIMST University.

He said the allocations given by the Government were for the MIC, not for Samy Vellu’s personal use.
