MCA’s surprise result should signal voters

PAS vice-president Datuk Mahfuz Omar today urged Bagan Pinang voters to reject corrupted leaders by taking cognisance from MCA’s unexpected extraordinary general meeting (EGM) results.

Speaking at a press conference here today, Mahfuz lauded MCA central delegates for showing “high integrity by rejecting two leaders for issues relating to credibility and leadership”.

“We hope this will be a signal (to Bagan Pinang voters) to reject a corrupt candidate in the same manner that MCA rejected two leaders involved in corruption,” he said.

The PAS vice-president dubbed the Bagan Pinang by-election as a “choice between dignity and corruption (pilihan antara maruah dan rasuah)”.

After months of internal crisis, MCA delegates today passed a no-confidence vote against its president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat by a slim 14-vote majority.

The delegates also overturned the suspension of its former deputy president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek but did not pass a motion to reinstate Chua as deputy president.

Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Tan Sri Mohd Isa Samad had been the target of Pakatan Rakyat (PR) leaders given Isa’s past record of being found guilty by the Umno disciplinary board for money politics in the 2004 party elections.

Isa, who was former Negeri Sembilan menteri besar, is up against Negeri Sembilan PAS commissioner Zulkefly Mohamad Omar in a contest that will be decided tomorrow (today).
