Show you are M’sian first, Umno leaders told

(Malaysian Mirror) – DAP icon Lim Kit Siang has a question for Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and his party colleagues in Umno: “Are you prepared to be Malaysian first, Malay second?”

The Ipoh Timur MP said the ‘1Malaysia’ logo dominated the just-concluded  Umno general assembly and the slogan, he added, was clearly the fad of the day in the speeches of the party president, his deputy Muhyiddin Yassin and the leaders of the Umno Youth, Wanita and Puteri wings.

“But are all the Umno leaders, including Najib and Muhyiddin really serious and fully committed to the 1Malaysia slogan as the overarching national philosophy in nation-building?” Lim, the DAP advisor asked in his blog.

The proof of the pie is in the eating

“Without having to go into details, the first test of whether they are serious about the 1Malaysia policy is whether they are prepared to set the example of being ‘Malaysian first, Malay second’ – for everyone to be Malaysian first and Malay, Chinese, Indian, Kadazan or Iban second.

“Although the proof of the pudding is in the eating, there is no need to get to the eating stage even,” he said, urging Najib and all Umno leaders to make a public commitment of being ‘Malaysian first’ in keeping with the 1Malaysia motto.

“I, for one, pledge to be Malaysian first, Chinese second,” said Lim, inviting every minister, deputy minister and MP to declare, in the forthcoming Parliament session, that he or she is Malaysian first and theur ethnic group second.
