Liow claims political assassination

(Bernama) – MCA’s newly appointed deputy president and Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai has described the allegations made against him and his wife in a police report, which first surfaced on the Internet, as “baseless” and a “political assassination” attempt.

Segambut member of parliament Lim Lip Eng on Sunday lodged the police report against Liow’s wife Lee Su Loo pertaining to allegations in an unsigned letter that she received a multi-purpose vehicle from a company often involved in the health ministry’s projects.

Speaking to reporters at the parliament lobby yesterday, Liow said he would give his fullest cooperation to the police because he wanted to discover the truth.

“It is totally baseless and it is a political assassination. I will say that it is very evil. They are trying to drag my family in. This kind of work is just to kick me at this politically difficult time,” Liow said when asked about the letter circulating in cyberspace that alleged his wife had received a car worth RM600,000 from a supplier who had dealings with the ministry.

Meanwhile, Bernama reported that police had referred to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) a report lodged against Liow’s wife pertaining to allegations contained in the letter published on the Internet.

MACC’s deputy chief commissioner Datuk Abu Kassim Mohamed yesterday confirmed that police had referred the case to the MACC and that the commission was looking into it.

“We have received the information from the police. We are studying the report and will investigate the matter,” he told a news conference.

He declined to elaborate on the issue, saying there was a need to protect confidentiality in the investigations.

“Be patient and don’t speculate on anything. Let us do our job,” he said.
