Achieve 50 per cent broad band connectivity early

(Bernama) – The Information Communication and Culture Minister Rais Yatim wants the 50 per cent broad band connectivity to be achieved in households early next year.

According to Rais, the achievement was important to enable Malaysia to keep up with Internet developments in the world.

“I feel that the 50 per cent achievement must be reached quickly and a part of it depends on permanent lines by Telekom and wireless lines including by Wi-Max and Wi-Fi,” he told reporters after officiating ‘Kumpulan Rakan Siswa Jasa Malaysia (Karisma)’ here Tuesday.

Commenting on the criticism hurled by deputy chairman of the Malaysia-Australia Business Council, Michael Halpin, on the unsatisfactory Internet speed in the country, Rais said not all that was said was true.

He said the statement by Halpin was as if to make Malaysia as lagging behind as compared to developed countries whereas the broad band service in the country was at 27 per cent almost at par with Hungary which was at 30 per cent this year.
